Hi,

What are your five favorite music DVD's and why? IMO, The Beatles Anthology would only count as one selection.

Thinking of buying many more,
Jeffrey :)

I like the Al Stewart DVD. (I think there is only one available)

Just picked up the Cat Stevens DVD. :agree:

Alright, since "Anthology" only counts as one:

Beatles- "Anthology". I would like to see more video content of the Fabs released though. A collection of ALL the videos that were shot for songs, as well as early live TV performances.

Bjork- "Volumen". Fantastic collection of videos! Set off a Bjork frenzy for me.

Bjork- "Live at Cambridge". This is my favorite live DVD. I think "ethereal" best describes it.

Rolling Stones- "Gimmie Shelter". Man, I wish every pre-1990 release got the same TLC treatment as this when released to DVD. Incredible documentary.

The Who- "The Kids Are Alright". I remember seeing a guy post on the AVS forum who wanted a Who DVD that was anamorphic. Some people are slaves to their A/V equipment. I'll take the Who in their prime over some pretty recent concert. The restoration on this is comparable to "Gimmie Shelter".

Beatles Anthology: 5.1 Beatles!
The Concert For George: Just a classy package!
Alison Krauss and Union Station Live: Great sound, great voice, great musicians!
Steve Vai Live at The Astoria: Just crazy!
Rush in Rio: big, sludgy, murky, and great!

Beatles Anthology
Concert for George
Gimme Shelter
The Kids Are Alright - it doesn't make you a slave to your system to want this in anamorphic.
Peter Gabriel - Secret World Live - Most entertaining arena concert I ever attended

Alright, not a 5.1 person (although someday I will be), but here goes. I'd be better off with a top 10, as this list changes frequently. Today, I'll choose:

Beatles Anthology - Great documentary, I often just pick a disc at random to watch.

Four Flicks - I agree with the comments about Gimme Shelter above, awesome disc, but it's so dark, content-wise, for me, that I can't watch it often. Four Flicks is a gluttony of Stones stuff.

American Folk Blues Festival, Vol. 2 - Haven't gotten Vol. 1 yet, but I picked this up at my local indie shop and it's awesome.

Last Waltz - Loved it (first time I ever saw it was on DVD), loaned it to an attenion-span-challenged co-worker who said he liked it so much he had to watch it twice.

Tie, Led Zeppelin/The Kids Are Alright. I can't choose one over the other, they are both great.

Star One - Live on Earth / Awestriking performances from all the vocalists and musicians playing the most addictive music I've ever experienced.

Dream Theater - Metropolis 2000 / Four virtuosos marvelously performing one of the best albums ever, in spite of some cheesy production.

Rush in Rio / These guys still rule!

Transatlantic - Live in Europe / This was an excellent show, and as close as I'll ever come to seeing 'em live.

Spock's Beard - Don't Try This at Home / Seriously cool music although curiously mastered in mono.

1. The Last Waltz. Greatest concert film ever IMO.

2. Stop Making Sense. The Talking Heads in all their sweaty, funkified glory.

3. Concert for George. Beautiful show. Never heard of Sam Brown before this, but she steals the show. What a voice.

4. Roxy Music at the Apollo. Great band and never sounded better.

5. Hard Day's Night. Does that count?

Pearl Jam - Touring Band
Alice in Chains - Music Box & Unplugged
Beatles - Anthology and their films
Roger Waters - In the Flesh
David Gilmour - Live

I've got several others that are very good, but these I've popped in more than once. The AIC - Unplugged may be my favorite of the bunch, followed by the Gilmour.

Rush in Rio A great concert by one of my favorite bands! Crank it up!!!

James Taylor "Live at the Beacon Theatre" I miss Don, but this is still a great show.

Deep Purple "Australia `99 Total Abandon" Steve Morse kicks some major booty with Deep Purple.

Pink Floyd "The Wall" Over the top and then some, but I love it.

Tenacious D "The Complete Masterworks" Jack Black is a madman

Honorable Mention:

Lynyrd Skynyrd "Freebird the movie/ Tribute Tour" a nice two-fer for Skynyrd fans. Not the greatest quality, but I was too young to see the original band play live so anything with Ronnie is priceless. The Tribute Tour is a decent documentary of that event, too.

Now we're talkin'! :agree: ...but I can't limit my list to 5 titles; sorry! :shake:

Of the hundreds of classic rock concert performances on DVD, legit, grey market (i.e., usually Tawain or Korean are legit releases) & occasional boots (DVD or DVD-R) which I've seen or acquired here are my faves:

Official releases, imports, etc. :righton: (no particular order of preference):

Rush - Rush in Rio
Rush - Exit Stage Left (Tawain import)
UFO - Too Hot To Handle (Korean import; sound inconsistant, but great Schenker guitar)
Led Zeppelin - (anthology; stunning!)
Who - The Kids Are Alright (amazing remaster; expanded edition has really cool extras too!)
Who - Live at the Isle of Wight (butchered Isle of Wight performance, but great nonetheless)
Jimi Hendrix - Blue Wild Angel (complete Isle of Wight performance)
Jimi Hendrix - Live at Woodstock (nice remaster; more complete)
Jimi Hendrix - Jimi Plays Berkeley (nice remaster with audio only extras)
AC/DC - Live '77 at the Hippodrome (Jap. import; Region 2; NTSC)
Cars - Musikladen Live 1979 (excellent live performance early in the band's career)
Focus - Live in America (2002 Performance of reformed new band)
Focus - Masters from the Vault (Classic Rock Productions release; live & documentary)
Bad Company - Merchants of Cool (nice performance; well recorded)
Rolling Stones - Rock and Roll Circus (Brazil Import)
Rolling Stones - Gimme Shelter (Criterion; remastered; extra rare performances from '69 tour)
Procol Harum - The Best of Musikladen Live (nice in studio live performance; extras)
Yes - Yessongs (dated; visibly worn, but pro-shot film of most notable line-up in their prime.)
Yes - Union (Korean import; only avail. previously on import Jap. LD)
ABW&H - An Evening of Yes Music (Korean Import; good quality; the dom. release is OOP)
Cream - Fresh Live Cream (several rare performances of signature songs)
Cream - Live at Royal Albert Hall (PAL; Region 2; complete concert; remastered; best vers.)
Old Grey Whistle Test, Vol I - (PAL; 2 disc set; Region 2; inc. performers not on dom. issue)
Old Grey Whistle Test, Vol II - (PAL; Region 2; rare performances; some unreleased here)
Wishbone Ash - (Classic Rock Productions; orig. line-up of band from '89 performance)
Van Der Graaf Generator - Godsbluff Live '75 (Classic Rock Productions release)
Monterey Pop Festival - (Criterion; with rare performances; prev. unreleased; many bands)
The Best of the Beat Club - (German import; PAL; Region 2; 10 Vol. set covering 1965-1973)

Okay, here are my favorite boots  (emphasis on quality and rarity):

Rolling Stones - Ladies & Gentlemen (4Reel release; best version; classic '72 Dallas pro-shot)
Toronto Rocks - Sars Benefit with AC/DC, Rush & Rolling Stones (Bully release; exc. pro-shot)
New Musical Express - Poll Winners Concert 1965 (Hercules release; exc. pro-shot; rare performances by Brit. Invasion bands inc. the Rolling Stones, Beatles & Animals; many more)
Jimi Hendrix - Room Full of Hendrix (4Reel release; 1969 RAH Concert; decent video.; great sound; best available)

Whew! :help:

And I haven't even mentioned those titles that'll be coming out very soon (i.e., within the next couple of months) which I anticipate will be exceptional, such as The Moody Blues "Lost Performance" DVD which is concert of the band in it's prime at the Paris Theater in 1970, and Slade: A Critical Review from Classic Rock Productions, which is supposed to cover video performances of their numerous British hits during their most succesful years (1970-72), or Procol Harum Live at Union Chapel, et al., ...well, I guess that I did mention them after all!

Oh well, let the comments begin! :D

Cat
