View Full Version : roxy music-avalon, HDCD remaster, or...
I've seen two versions of this remaster, one was in a pseudo-LP jewel case, and the other was an HDCD. So, what's the difference here? Also, what's the best LP pressing of this great, great, album?

I like the Simply Vinyl LP pressing. I'm glad I bought it. It sounds better than any US pressing I've owned. The SVLP is smoother, i.e., less brittle than a US issue. If I recall correctly, Avalon was a digital recording from 1982.
There may be other imported LP issues out there, but the SVLP is still available.
As an aside, while SVLP has been bashed in audiophile circles, there are some good pickings in the catalog. I wouldn't rule out the label because of a few bad apples.

The pseudo-LP jewel case CD and the jewel case CD are the same. They are both HDCD encoded and sound wonderful. Do a search - we discussed this about a month ago. The vinyl was discussed too.

By Pseudo-Lp jewel case I'm assuming you mean mini-Lp sleeve? If so kayaker is correct, same thing. It just says HDCD on the disk itself and IMO sounds great. I haven't yet heard the Simply Vinyl to compare but I'll order it soon I think. As an aside to this I see that Bryan Ferry's new solo coming out next month has Eno on it.:D

HDCD version is OK but the definitive versions are the original British EG vinyl LP and the original Japanese Polydor LP.
