what's up with best buy charging essentially full list? 96.99 for the one I want (season 7)... other stores playing the same game. dvdplanet has it for 69.99 (30% off list), but are sold out right now (no wonder--they're the only ones discounting it!)

Want to see something very sociologically intriguing? Check eBay for X-Files auctions. Notice the insane amount of pirate boxes up there? I have to believe that this is a reaction to the *insane* retail prices of the seasons, as the same problem hits Star Trek, but few others (except in cases like ER where most of the seasons still haven't been released domestically). You don't see pirates of Futurama or the Simpsons sold nearly as blatantly nearly as often.

Good advice for the price search. There are many retailers offering a discount.

That's what my sister and I have done since Season 2: find used, nice copies at around $50 a pop and split the costs. Even with my brother's manager discount, 30% off a VOYAGER box set is still way too much scratch. And like sis says, there were only 15 eps the first season and the list is $120? WTF? She liked the series a lot more than I did, but even a professional has her limits....

Dvdplanet is 69.97 with free shipping, although they're out of stock on some sets. I can't even access deepdiscountdvd.com due to an incompatibility between their web site and my security settings. They could use a new webmaster.

If everybody kept their dvds as nice as I keep mine this would be fine, but most used stuff I see is at least somewhat beat up and/or missing parts of the original packaging.

My big complaint is that Fox is penalizing (a nicer word then one I could think of) the people who have bought each season as it was released. Original SRP was $150 and now it has been lowered to $99.95. I averaged about $80 per box set but if I had waited I could have saved a lot of money. Lesson I've learned: don't buy box sets from Fox until all the seasons have been released. It's going to be a long wait before I buy the Simpsons.

It's going to be a long wait before I buy the Simpsons.I will be happily buying Buffy Season 6 from Fox this week for under $40 at Costco. The real lesson is to not buy a DVD set until the price is acceptable to you. Paramount lowered the prices of their catalog titles over the last year or two. I did not feel bad about this, I just bought a lot more Paramount catalog titles than I did back when they were all $30 MSRP. The Simpsons sets from Fox have all been pretty reasonably priced considering the amount of effort that went into producing them. The X-Files has alway been pricey, but I only bought used, and did not pick-up season 8 until the price drop since I didn't see it used and it was not worth $100 to me.

I work at Fox in Los Angeles and I won't begin to tell you what they sell for in the studio store...(really cheap!!!)

Well, you gotta' take a stand sometime. If the asking price is a "fair deal" to the buyer, then it is a fair deal and the buyer agrees to trade funds for the product. If the deal is "unfair", to you anyways, then do not agree to pay the price because the value of the exchange is not there for you. Simple choices that you must make for yourself everyday. I will agree that the value is not there for me, so I'm not buying. I also know I may miss out on some of these things, but I have made my stand, and I have no regrets.

According to DVD Price Check, Australia is still the land of the cheapest X-Files boxes at about $35 (US) a season;)... of course these are R4 PAL DVDs.
