View Full Version : Anyone catch Shrek 2 yet?

We caught a matinee late this afternoon. I won't say much about it yet (to avoid spoilers), but I think I'd give the original "Shrek" film the nod over this one. Think about it: all of the great fairy tale jokes and sight gags were in the first film, and really can't work a second time. Puss-In-Boots is hilarious, though, and the donkey is back as well. Someone mentioned to me that there were a few movie references to modern films, but since I don't watch those, they'd have been lost on me anyway. (One sight gag is from "The Matrix", I heard... *shrug* )
The kids liked it, but I wouldn't say they loved it. Once it's on DVD, though, they'll probably watch it several times in a week. :D

My six year old James is going to see it in an hour as part of a birthday party he's going to. I'll let him give us a review. :) :shake:

The merchandising is indeed quite excessive with this one. To put it mildly.

Geesh, the Shrek cereal has the most prominent display of any product in my local stores! It's so THERE right when you enter.
I'm actually looking forward to it. I'll wait for my kids to arrive for the summer, mid June.
The most anticipated films for my kids, however, are the new Harry Potter and Spider Man movies.

Just got back from seeing it. Very mild, light, and quick family entertainment...kids liked but not loved it. Not nearly as enjoyable as the first, as it could not duplicate that classic storyline or catch the same lightning in the bottle. Still, a good afternoon with the kids, nowhere near the pain of a Rugrats Go Wild or its ilk.

I didnt think this was that great of a movie. 2 stars. The first was 4 stars. The pussy was funny. Puss puss puss.
I thought Shrek 2 was just as funny, if not funnier than the first one. I recommend it.

I like the way The Onion's AV Club put it:
For some, an ending isn't actually happy until all the revenue streams have been tapped...
I thought the first one was ok. Can't say I'm dying to see the sequel.

I thought most of the jokes were more for adults than kids, especially all the "pop-culture" references. Lots of talking and far less action than the 1st one. And Shrek (the character) is pretty blah (now that he's married!) - its the supporting cast that gets the laughs. That said, the animation work is incredible and I did laugh quite a bit. Stick around for the credits, too. A little "interlude" with donkey is funny...

I laughed a lot. Certainly the funniest movie I've seen so far this year. Loved all the pop cultural references and inside jokes. C'mon, Larry King (yes, that Larry King!) providing the voice of the ugly step-sister?--brilliant casting! And Tom Waits's voice coming out of the piano player in a sleazy tavern! Nearly as good as the first, recommended for kids of all ages.
BTW, did anybody else think the Fairy Godmother was loosely based on Anne Robinson, the host of Weakest Link?

There's a new Shrek movie? That's strange...I haven't seen ANY publicity for it here in L.A.

This makes me want to see it now! Larry King and Tom Waits. Very cool.
BTW, do you think that might have been the real Anne Robinson?

No, the Fairy Godmother was voiced by Jennifer Saunders. But her appearance, voice, and manner had me checking the credits to make sure it wasn't Robinson.
P.S. According to boxofficemojo.com, Shrek 2 has pulled in an estimated $125 mil in its first 5 days of release, including a new one-day record of $44 mil on Saturday alone. (I'm just fascinated by these kinds of stats.)
I saw it last night with the kids and wife. Overall, everyone enjoyed it and it seemed to have a little bit of everything for all ages. As compared to the 1st movie, Shrek 2 seemed to lag until about 2/3 of the way into it until you got to the "Knights" tv show (a spoof of the show Cops). Overall I would give it 3 stars and the original 4 stars. Still very entertaining and the cameos really do help to make this one.

That's what I thought. We could hear kids getting restless until that Cops scene.

My family and I saw it this afternoon. I thought the movie was quite enjoyable. If you liked the first one I'm sure you'll like this one too.
We've tried twice this weekend to see it. Sold out both times.
I think it's gonna be a block buster! :)

Oh yeah :righton: I live in a small town (Mt. Pleasant, for Rudy and others that live in Michigan), it's playing on three screens at our theater, my girlfriend and I showed up a half-hour early today and the first show as sold out! Luckily, a family had to cancel out, and we bought some of their tickets.
Entertaining flick, loved the cameos from Larry King and Tom Waits.

Good to know this one's a hit. I won't be able to see it till next weekend (Memorial Day) since I'm swamped at work.
Can't wait.

Got in on Friday, no problems, at the 5:30pm matinee showing at the Showcase Cinemas in Westland. Even got there at 5:35pm, so we lucked out and didn't have to sit through so many of those ridiculous movie trailers.

I'D AGREE w/Jimbo (and a couple others)--as good, prob better than first one. We saw it last Wednesday night to a near-empty house. Prob would see again.
I think there's a strong tendency to like the "first one" of anything better, one reason why so many sequels fall short. (That, and most shouldn't have been done in the first place.)
This one was a little more dependent on dialogue interplay and "relationships," which I liked. I think the strong word of mouth and "repeaters" will prob push this one well up in the stratosphere of all-time box office performers.

I thought the gags in this one were a bit more inspired than the first, but it was overall not that memorable. An amusing 100 minutes at the movies, though.
