View Full Version : "Friends"-not funny
Is it just me or is there anyone else out there that never found this show even the remote bit funny??? And I like the charactors and the actors (Jennifer A. is a doll...)...nothing against them at all....but from day one I never though this show was funny at all...
Am I on an island here???

I haven't found a sitcom funny since "Three's Company."

Add me to your list! I never understood the appeal of this show, nor do I think it's anywhere near funny. You go down to the DVD section of any store, and you see rows and rosw of Friends DVDs. I just don't get it. Maybe i'm not the target demographic. I don't know.
Seinfeld, I understand, and think is funny! But, Friends? Uh-uh! :shake:
It's like Saved By The bell and Full House, and all those other "family"-type shows. I can sit through them all with a straight face. There's nothing to even smile about! Now, All In The Family? THAT was FUNNY! I can double over in pain laughing at that one!
This current generation of Hollywood writers sure write about a different life than what I know.
I'm getting old, I guess.

Yeah! Well, I thought "Family Ties" and "Moonlighting" were pretty funny too.

"Moonlighting" was not a sitcom. It's called a single camera show. Like "Malcolm in the Middle" or "Scrubs." But it was very funny.

I never liked "Friends," though Lisa Kudrow's Phoebe was the only remotely interesting character because she was simply quirky.
These people were paid outrageous sums of money for something so woefully vacuous and unfunny. :(

How about "Married With Children"? Gotta love Al...

I don't know if the show sold on "funny" as much as "comfortable." I think most long-running sitcoms make this transition -- how funny was M*A*S*H after several seasons?

Never have I seen a more UNINTERESTING group of characters.
Make room on that island for me! Not funny.

How about "Married With Children"?
That show was so much better than most people give it credit for. Just like Roseanne, South Park, etc.

I never thought Friends was "funny". At first, there were funny moments, but I stopped watching it after the 3rd year or so (although I never watched it regularly). It seemed to me it got to be more of a soap-opera-like story than a sitcom. Light, but more of a plodding storyline.
I was in Sams yesterday, and they had a whole wall full of "Friends" DVDs, year by year, and a sign for buying the last episode on DVD. They were well stocked. Is anyone buying these????

Okay, what is a "single camera show"? You would think they had decent enough budget to buy one more camera! :help:

Everytime I've seen Friends I get a laugh out of it, it was well written.
I just got tired of watching it after the second season because of the soap opera aspects of their lives....very unreal.
Never have I seen a more UNINTERESTING group of characters.

I agree 100%.
Aside from a few almost funny one-liners, the show did nothing for me. The characters seemed very plastic.
Now, Seinfeld.... that's an American sitcom to be proud of :righton:

Okay, what is a "single camera show"? You would think they had decent enough budget to buy one more camera!
A single camera show is one created like a movie, with multiple angles and takes, with no audience. The final product is assembled in the editing room.
Sitcoms are traditionally shot with multiple cameras around the perimeter of an established setting -- like Jerry Seinfeld's apartment, the Central Perk coffee shop, or the Cheers bar -- usually with a live audience, with scenes performed straight through like a stage play.

I never was a regular "Friends" viewer, but I think it was mildly amusing. I would certainly put it above something like "Saved By The Bell" or "Facts of Life," but that isn't saying much.
What I'm surprised by, frankly, is how many people LOVED Seinfeld -- including most of my friends. That show never did anything for me.
To each his own.

"Comfortable" is a very good point. Another critic called it "comfort food".
I actually laughed with this show during the first few seasons. The writing was solid and the characters, while not "real", were cute and likable enough. The cast gets most of the credit for that I think.
It really got bogged down in silly soap opera cliches after a few seasons and I lost interest. I'm surprised that it lasted as long as it did. The hype at the end was unbearable.
Remember how "disappointing" the ratings were during last season and most of this one?! People really didn't care until they were practically forced to care!

Over here, Channel 4 is saturated with Friends reruns...
I'd take Friends before something like, say, "Will & Grace" any other day of the week; although the earlier epsiodes were a bit crass, and the later episodes are just tired, I do like the "Ross splits from Emily/Chandler goes with Monica" season.
Come to think of it, until a few weeks ago, Channel 4 WERE giving us Friends before "Will & Grace" every other day of the week!

"Moonlighting" was not a sitcom.

I put it into that category. Dave and Maddie had "situations" that were funny.
