In the 90's Capricorn released some small label record anthologies. Has anyone heard these and do you have an opinion as to sound quality (or anything else)?

I'm eyeing the Swingtime Records Story in particular, but these are a few that have been released. Thanks for any info.

The Swingtime Records Story - R&B, Blues and Gospel
The Cobra Records Story - Chicago Rock and Blues
The Scepter Records Story
The Fire/Fury Records Story
The Jewel/Paula Records Story

My friend Diana Haig did some (or all) of these.

The Jewel/Paula comp. has "Nothing Takes The Place Of You" by T. McCall on it. One of the greatest records ever made!

I bought the Scepter box (missing the booklet though) after finding a Scepter sampler CD from the box in a used record store. Lots of studio chatter before songs and generally good sound.

You have to love a set that has a disclaimer on the back that says "The music on this Compact Disc was originally recorded on analog equipment, prior to modern noise reduction techniques. This CD preserves as closely as possible the sound of the original recording, but its high resolution also reveals the limitations in the master tape, including noise and other distortions."

By the way, it would be cool to see some compilations of other 60's-70's labels. MGM, Kapp, etc. Cameo/Parkway would sell! (That would be a miracle too!)

Wasn't there a Buddah Records box set?

Hi Mike !

The only one I can recommend here is The Cobra Records Story. I absolutely love it ! If you're into Otis Rush and Magic Sam, the best recordings they ever did in their careers is here. The sound quality is excellent and hasn't been molested by current technology. The accompanying book is well researched and an interesting read.

BTW, I've been looking for the Swingtime set for some time now. Might you know where I can find one ?

Thanks !

Thanks all!

Steve - The T. McCall song is covered by William Bell on Soul of A Bell - but you probably already know that.

Dan - The Buddah Box is called "The Buddah Box" - it's probably oop already.

Ed - I found a place on the internet listing the Swingtime collection, but I called today and they don't have it. I hate that. On the upside, I found a new copy of Steve's Ivory Joe Hunter collection. :) I've been an Otis Rush fan since I read the Lester Bang's piece "Otis Rush Mugged By An Iceberg" and then picked up the old Flyright comp, I recently picked up the Fuel 200 comp, but haven't listened to it yet. I still haven't gotten around to Magic Sam - one of these days!

Hi Mike !

I found the Swingtime & Jewel Paula sets at of all places: Walmart.com !

They are in stock and are between $23-$27 dollars. I recommend getting them as they are OOP.

Thanks for the idea of checking these out !

Thanks! This is amazing because I was just at walmart.com a couple days ago and I forgot to look for these. A google search led me to walmart when I was looking for AVI cd's. They didn't have what I was looking for (Silas Hogan, Lazy Lester) but they did have some others including Roscoe Shelton and Lightnin Slim, which I recommend if you like some good swamp blues - all AVI is out of print because the company is out of business (although Ace UK has reissued some titles) Thanks again - I ordered 1 of each. :D
