I haven't seen this mentioned here before so I felt compelled to bring it up. For anyone who's into this duo, you must pick up this CD from Razor & Tie. Ever since I bought this, I can't keep it out of CD player. First off the music is excellent and their voices send shivers down your spine, but Steve's mastering is so warm and alive, you never tire of the sound - at any volume. The mandolins and those awesome
"slapback echo" guitar solos just jump out of the mix. "Hoping That You're Hoping" is one my all-time favorites. This is one of the best remastering jobs of '50's vintage recordings I've ever heard. I highly recommend this CD - When I Stop Dreaming: The Best Of The Louvin Brothers.

What kind of music is it? Rockabilly?

They were a big influence on the Everly Brothers so there is a similarity to there, but I would say it's more of a pure hillbilly/country sound with a "soft" rockabilly edge.
I will also recommend "A Tribute To The Delmore Brothers". It's out of print on Capitol. I can't say if it's been no-noised or what have you, but it sounds pretty good to me. And the music is absolutely top notch A+ all the way. A great, great disc!

The Louvin Brothers are incredible, although not for all tastes. I've only brought them up once here (a couple years ago on the old site) and got little response.
As far as saying who they are like, that's a tough call. Have you heard of the Stanley Brothers?
I did a direct comparison of the Razor & Tie and the Capitol CDs. All I can say is Wow! The Capitol CDs were auctioned off on Ebay the following day.
I would love it if more of their stuff was available on CD (well mastered, of course).

There is a box set of ALL their Capitol stuff available from Bear Family so I imagine the sound quality would be pretty damn good. Right now this disc is working good enough for me, but if I had money to burn...

Way to go on the Louvins.I have the Bear Family box and it is worth every penny if you like the them.I also have a disc of the Louvins live at New River Ranch in 1956.Excellent !!
As far as the Stanley's are concerned,I tell people who like Oh Brother ,Where Art Thou to grab the Columbia era CD so they can hear where they got Man Of Constant Sorrow from.Ralph Stanley sounded 70 yrs old when he was 20.

Yeah, isn't that in the $150+ range? Close Harmony? I think that would be too much of a good thing for me. I'm not a box set guy like I used to be. I now prefer the original releases when available.

It love to own the Bear Family box. I bet it's great. The New River Ranch CD is one I will definitely check out.
I have the Stanley's Bear Family CDs and I think the Columbia/Legacy might sound a little better. Yes, people that are going crazy over the OBWAT soundtrack would be advised to seek out the Stanley's version(s). Now those are the real thing!

"Satan Is Real" is a great album too as well as thier Christmas album. Neither mastered by Steve but both sound good.

I had Satan Is Real and their first album on CD but after comparing them to Steve's work, I decided to get rid of them. I rarely do that if it's music I really like but there was such a drastic difference on my system, especially with their first album, that I decided to let them go.
I almost held onto Satan Is Real, if for no reason other than the cover!
