I spent the afternoon today at my friend's house playing some LP's on his (MY old) stereo. One that really caught my attention was the grey label Columbia Masterworks pressing for the original Broadway soundtrack of The "Sound of Music"...the Mary Martin/Theo Bikel version. Lotsa murk, goosh, and soft analog reverb here - absolutely dripping with warmth.

Anyway, what's the deal with the CD releases of this. I believe there have been 2, maybe 3, versions released over the years...the latest with that ubiquitous "remastered" banner. I downloaded some clips from it off the net and they all seemed fairly strident...nothing like what I heard today. Any recommendations as to which CD version is the best (i.e. the flattest and most natural in respect to the LP version)? Again, I'm only interested in the original stage soundtrack version.

The first Columbia CD attempt sounded ok, made from the two-track stereo mixdown of 1959 (I think). I heard a second press that sounded like a three-track remix totally tweaked and compressed.

So, I don't know.

My old Stereo LP sounded the best, a tube cutting of a tube mix. Murk and goosh city!
