Live At Leeds COMPLETE

And, BTW, the bootleg Guitars Kissing is really a lot better than the official "Live 1966" release, at least for the electric set. Stereo mix is a heck of a lot better.

You're correct ... I just thought I'd list the "official" version -- which does have some weird echo effect on Dylan's voice during the electric set that's not on the boot, among other oddities ...

Say what you want about that Dylan 1966 Live release, but Bob's management rejected the initial stereo mix. (One cut from an even earlier mix using a tape from Liverpool escaped on a 45 in 1966 with Bob's OK). The released mix from the 3 track master had Bob's OK - sounds great to me, as did the vinyl boot released many years ago and likely derived from the two track movie audio tapes but who knows. The 1963 "In Concert" record would be on my list - that is if Columbia ever release it - great sound quality and a great performance. Some of the tracks have been posted from the test pressing on Bob's web site.

Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense
(The new edition of course, which has 16 tracks, the original 9 track release is crap, they probably did that so it would fit on one LP)

Deep Purple Made In Japan

Queen Live Killers - I think the album was culled from a lot of different shows though, and it has a partly pre-recorded version of Bohemian Rhapsody; the track probably could not be played completely live anyway;

lots of live jazz albums are great; for both artistic and sound quality, I would choose two albums by Carmen McRae - For lady Day (Vols 1&2) and The Great American Songbook (Live at Donte's) .

You guys seem to choose the "group favourites".

My choice is for the best live recording I've ever heard.

Rush: All The World's A Stage

Seeing is believeing;)

Don't get me wrong though as Woodstock is great and a classic just like Bob Seger and The Band.

It's just that Rush is one of the very, very few bands that shines brighter live as opposed to the studio and yes Neil Peart is wayyy better live, a regular percussion God.

My faves, not in any specific order:

"Gratitude" Earth Wind & Fire
"Frampton Comes Alive" Peter Frampton
"Live At The Apollo II" James Brown
"P Funk Live Earth Tour" Parliament
"Live" The Jacksons
"Live In New Orleans" Maze feat. Frankie Beverly
"Rattle & Hum" U2

Jeff, you were reading my mind! Most of those were exactly the ones I was going to list, except i'm not a U2 fan.

These are my favourites:
"Waiting for Columbus" Little Feat
"Live at Leeds" The Who
"It's Too Late To Stop Now" Van Morrison
"Live Cream" Cream
"E.C. Was Here" Eric Clapton
"Recurring Dream - Live Bonus Disc" Crowded House
"Made In Japan" Deep Purple
"Welcome Back My Friends...." ELP
"Band of Gypsys" Band of Gypsys
"On Broadway 1995" King Crimson - Collectors Club release
"Get Yer Ya-Yas Out" Rolling Stones
"Shadows & Light" Joni Mitchell
"1969 Live" Velvet Underground
"Rock 'n' Roll Animal" Lou Reed
Not all are superb recordings, but the performances....

PS did you notice who the recording engineer for "Just One Night" was? A surprisingly good recording - I just think the band is far too creaky compared with EC Was Here, which is not as good a recording.

.... and "Belafonte at Carnegie Hall" by the great Harry Belafonte on Classic double gold CD. What a performer ("Returns to Carnegie Hall" is excellent also)

Ok - Van's "Too Late..." was mentioned twice, and J Geils "Full House" once, stealing some of my thunder, but does anyone here like "Mad Dogs and Englishmen" by Joe Cocker? How about "Roadwork" by Edgar Winter's White Trash? J. Geils sophmore live set "Blow Your Face Out" ain't half bad either. The 2 "Live Cream" volumes are much more impressive than the "Wheels of Fire" live tracks (IMHO).

Also - anyone remember "Hendix In the West"?

Matt
01-26-2002, 02:09 PM
Duke Ellington - the Fargo, ND concert of 1940
Miles Davis - The Complete Plugged Nickel Recordings
Miles Davis - Live-Evil
John Coltrane - Live at the Village Vanguard (the 4 CD box set)
Bill Evans - Waltz For Debby & Sunday at the Village Vanguard
Charlie Parker - Jazz at Massey Hall
Charlie Parker - with Dizzy Gillespie at Carnegie Hall (the Blue Note CD)

All have to try and find a few of these.

One thing to remember about live albums - you don't always know which ones have been "sweetened" (overdubbed) in the studio!

It's not a big deal to me. For example, SRV "Live Alive!" was heavily overdubbed by SRV because he was so disappointed when he listened to the tapes. I love the album, but is it really "live"?

Where do you draw the line? How many overdubs disqualify an album from being "live"? What about editing? One of the Allman Brothers "Fillmore East" CDs has two performances spliced together to make one. Is this legit? It's not something you heard if you were there!

If you want more of the "unvarnished truth", I guess there's always bootlegs...

Luke, I thought you didn't have this?

But I agree with you...I much prefer it over what came out officially.

And the other live Dylan I've picked up recently (thanks JP) has been excellent as well.

Do you mean Fillmore East or the 'Fillmore Concerts' set?

How about KISS - Alive II? A joke.

I don't like "Live Alive" at all. The one that needs to come out is the "Testify" bootleg (10/20/83 @ Ripley's Music Hall).

Although we've had this thread before on the DCC forum, I'll just throw out this one selection:

Dixie Dregs - Bring 'em Back Alive

The first Dregs I ever bought, and I have played the hell out of that CD.
