Herb Alpert & TTB - Whipped Cream & Other Delights

I have a mono version I bought from a used record store which I *really* like. Sounds very smooth, bass and kick are solid as can be. And of course, great tunes!

My question of the day: how does this compare to the stereo version (at least, I assume there's a stereo version!). Do people generally have a preference for one over the other?

I prefer the mono mix by Larry Levine. The stereo version was mixed by Herb Alpert.

Try and find a mono LP of "Going Places". The mono mix of "Tijuana Taxi" kills the stereo version!

Yeah, find one for me too. I'm sure there are zillions here in LA, but I don't go record hunting anymore.

I'd like to find "South Of The Border", "Whipped Cream", and "Going Places in the original mono versions. They are very nostalgic for me, and some of the songs are just plain fun.

Going to be listening to the Three-track originals of some of the TJB stuff next week with Larry Levine. But, I just love seeing that old A&M label going around on my turntable... :)

You know, I actually played "A Taste Of Honey" for my boss today at work.... we listened almost all the way through, when I said "for some reason, when I hear this I get this vision of a non-existant cowboy movie starring Peter Sellers". To which he looked at me in dismay and said "I was just thinking the same thing! Well, the Peter Sellers part anyways".

I think my response was "maybe everyone gets an image of Peter Sellers in their head when they hear that song". :D

Until Steve's remastering work makes it to retail shelfs, the best-sounding Herb Alpert compilation disk is "Definitive Hits", which contains 13 TJB chart singles and 7 solo chart singles. This collection was remastered in 20-bit by Doug Sax with tube equipment from first generation mixdown masters. Hopefully this can help Alpert fans get their fix until DCC or S & P releases Steve's material. The only negative is that the stereo mix for "The Lonely Bull" went MIA during the tape research for this collection, so Sax had to master from the mono single mix.:cool:

It's funny I was just listening to both these LPs earlier this week. My wife is sometimes baffled by the range of my musical interests. I have a near mint copy of the stereo version of WC&OD and I think it sounds pretty good but of course I don't have the mono mix to compare it with. I do have the mono version of Going Places that I purchased for .10 (no lie) at a used record store about a year ago. It's in very good shape and I agree Tijuana Taxi sounds great. Steve if you ever do have a chance to master these LPs to CD would it be possible to include the stereo and mono mixes (like Fresh Cream)? It's really cool to be able compare the mixes back to back.

BTW, the stereo mix of "The Lonely Bull" is sitting right there on the same tape as all the rest of the stereo songs from the first album.

I think they didn't want to use it because of the "twin-track" mix: Everything on the left channel & one overdubbed trumpet on the right channel. :eek:
