HI Steve,

Back from the wedding yet? Did you have a good time?:( Sure, guys love to go to weddings...:D

I have a question for you regarding the song "All Summer Long" by The Beach Boys. Your great sounding version on the DCC "Endless Summer" (and the Razor & Tie Beach Boys 2 CD set) sounds slightly different and much better than any other version I've ever heard. It also fades out a bit later too.

Did you do a mono remix of this song for the DCC Gold CD?

Thanks!:)

All,

Remixes of older material, when properly done, can result in a superior listening experience!

Which other tracks are remixed? And BTW, where was the place to buy the Razor set again?

Well, not for kicks. Give me some credit!

The stereo master is fake duophonic, the mono master had a big flaw in it, and the safety sounded terrible.

I duplicated the "sound" of the original version, even down to the Universal Audio EQ (1k) that Chuck Britz added to the mix. I didn't have the heart to use quite as much compression as he did though, so it's only 1/2 as squashed as the original.

Steve,

Your work on the song "works" for my ears!

I too noticed the improvement. And 409 Sounds the best I've ever heard it.

Ah, Steven, I thought so!

Beautiful job on "All Summer Long". You also did something neat to "Good Vibrations", "Surfin' Safari" and "409" too, right?

I wish you could remix the entire Beach Boys catalog (I know that you dislike remixes), but if YOU did them, I bet they would sound perfect! Imagine being able to hear "Fun Fun Fun" in stereo without it fading out in 2 seconds. That would be wonderful.

All,

I agree with Angel. Furthermore, it is my contention that many, many songs from the early Top 40 era (1955--67) could be well served by being re-mixed by Steve in particular. I believe that Steve's talents as a "Remixer" of material from this period is seriously underutilized! Think of the possibilities? Think of the possible sonic enhancements?

Bob :)

What was the flaw with the mono master?

What were you working from? A two-track "multitrack"? Why didn't you do stereo, even if it would be narrow?

Bob,

I agree with you. Steve is too modest about his remixing talents. I know for a fact that when he does a (rare) remix, he uses vintage equipment and always comes up with an authentic sounding mix, while taking advantage of the wider dynamic range of today's playback equipment.

I would love to see Steve remix:

The entire BEATLES, ROLLING STONES, BEACH BOYS, DOORS, LED ZEP, WHO and MOTOWN catalogs for starters. :D

Well, for the Beatles and Motown, you're going to have a hard time recreating that echo, especially Motown.

IMO, remixing should be left for material that really needs it. RCA Stones is a good example. Of course, who defines "needs it"? That's a tough one, but really, do any Zep recordings need to be remixed? What about LA Woman? Or Who's Next?

Angel,

Everything I have heard that has been re-mixed by Steve is extremely well done. I just wish there were more. What makes Steve so good at re-masters is exactly what makes him so good at re-mixes! He treats every recording with such respect, as they should be treated!

Bob :)

Sigh, wouldn't we all Angel. Hey we can't forget Jimi Hendrix in this lot either. ;)

Nah, Steve knows all the types of echo chambers, German plates and other kind of funky delays and reverb units inside and out.

I've heard one or two examples of his "recreations" of vintage echo.

Take for example the Gold Star echo chamber, the Capitol chamber, the Radio Recorders big chamber, that funky delay-chamber sound of Columbia, and the simple two-pronged 1/2 tape and 1/2 chamber compressed echo of the old Abbey Road days. I'm sure Steve has figured them all out. Heck, I've figured out some of them myself!

Steve can replicate them all. Bet no one else can. Did you hear those EMI remixes that were done on Gerry And The Pacemakers, Hollies, etc? Done by R. F. I believe. Did he forget the echo chambers or something? All that digital echo on those songs sounds TOTALLY WRONG FOR THE ERA!

End of rant, sorry.

Lukpac,

Sorry, it was an internal stairwell!

No, dudes:

It was a tiled bathroom wasn't it?

All,

It is my understanding there was an old internal stairwell in the building that went into the basement and that the whole basement added to the effect. I hope I am recalling this correctly?

Does the Razor & Tie2 CD Set have the same mix?

Matt

I believe so. I think clones of the DCC versions were used for matching tracks (though the levels may be a bit different).

Angel

Yes, same versions.

Get the Razor & Tie Beach Boys CD!
