View Full Version : Pink Panther Collection
This comes out next week with the five movies in it. Just wanted to give a heads up to all who were interested. outpost.com has it for about $40 with shipping, cheapest out there and about $8 a movie, outstanding price. I don't have it yet so cant give you a review, but at that price I am not going to worry about it.

I may only get it if I can't find my copy of "Strikes Again". I don't want to buy the movies a second time--they looked good enough to me the first time.

Still  that it's not going to include Return, and I wish they'd throw in just a few more cartoon shorts (and perhaps a couple of Owens-Corning fiberglass commercials) for the bonus disc, but otherwise it looks like a definite keeper.

Outpost.com's $34.99 + tax + shipping is the lowest I could find. Don't know if Fry's is selling it at the same price.

All the movies are anamorphic in the new set, I believe. Makes it a definite buy for me.

Deep Discount DVD isn't the deepest discount on the title (they're at $45), but they are also offering a bonus set which has a soundtrack highlights CD with a decent collection of tracks, including the two 45RPM single sides from "Shot In The Dark" (b/w "Shadows of Paris"), since that film never had a soundtrack LP. I already have most of the songs, but it does make for a nice collector set.

The region 2 set had more extra features that arent in this set. I guess they had outtakes in that set that arent in our version. That really ticks me off. I would love to see outtakes of Peter Sellers. What could be funnier than that? Why would they put deleted scenes, outtakes, etc on this set? Do you think they are saving them for next year's set when the new movie comes out?

Deep Discount DVD does offer price matching. Just send them an email with the link to the other on-line dealer's page showing the lower price. They will figure in the competitor's shipping charge, but not the sales tax.
There is an LP The Pink Panther, Music from the Film Score Composed and Conducted by Henry Mancini (RCA LSP-2795). It was reissued by Audiophile Record Service (ARS) in Germany on 180 gram vinyl. I don't know whether it's the soundtrack from the film but its back cover shows the movie credits. The liner notes were written by Peter Sellers (Alias Inspector Clouseau), who had this to say:
I've never written record notes before and I'm sure I will never be asked again. The poor fools, they don't know what they are missing.

I think he was talking about the Shot In The Dark movie not having a soundtrack - the Pink Panther LP is fairly common.

The Pink Panther LP has one of my favorite late-night ballads, "Royal Blue". We play this on gigs now and then when the other guys will indulge me! (I play bass.)

I've worn a copy or two of LSP-2795 in my lifetime. :D It's the soundtrack from the original Pink Panther movie...IMHO, the best of all the PP soundtracks. Nothing like Plas Johnson's sax throughout the album (and the film)...and Sellers' album notes are a riot.
"...but I assure you, it sounds lovely." :D
The CD isn't too bad, but I still want to get an original DynagrooVe of this one. My folks had the mono copy, which I played to death. I had an orange label reissue but I think I sold it many years ago.
I have the two "Shot In The Dark" songs on the 3-CD Mancini box set, but I'd still like to find the single of it. It was also on an LP at one point, possibly on a Camden compilation of some kind. The song "Shadows of Paris" is a chorus version, not the solo vocalist in the film. (Probably for contractual reasons.)

Eeet eees not my dog!
I was thinking about paying this set and am still on the fence. I read some reviews that mentioned there are only about 3 movies of the 5 worth getting. I vaguely remember most of the films and remember the last one that was made after Sellers had died and uses scenes pasted together in an interview/documentary fashion. Another great, Return of the Pink Panther is not included due to some studio rights situation.
So who can push me off the fence, one way or another about purchasing this one?

*shove* :D
My preference is the first two films ("Pink Panther" and "Shot In The Dark") before the Clouseau antics became ridiculous, but "Strikes Again" and "Revenge" are still good for a laugh. "Trail" I've never seen, and never wanted to, since it was just a bunch of scraps thrown together. The bonus disc may be a good one, though...haven't heard anyone comment on it yet. So even if you like three of the films, and can get them for $40 online, that's still cheap, per film!
You can get "Return Of" dirt cheap. I bought one as a gift for someone, from Walmart, for only $5.50, and elsewhere it's under $10. Mine has a different case, but otherwise the film should be the same.
I'm more on the fence because I have the movies already, and they look fine to me. I've misplaced "Strikes Again" it seems, but I don't think that is enough to motivate me to get the set.
Heard there's a new one coming out with, I think, Steve Martin as Clouseau...?? That would ruin it right there for me. If there's one person I can't stand, with a passion...

What's the story with 'Return of the Pink Panther' anyway. Didn't MGM like that one?

"Return" was not an MGM film, if I remember correctly. At any rate, it was the only one to come out on an indie laserdisc when the others were available on MGM/UA laserdiscs. It's also the funniest.

The DVD is released by Artisan, not MGM/UA.

If you are a member, Costco has the set for $38.99. My favorites are "A Shot in the Dark" and "...Strikes Again"
"...and you killed him in a writ of fealous jage!"
"That was a priceless Steinway!"
"Not Anymoore"
Return of the Pink Panther Trivia - The reason that MGM (who controls the United Artists film catalog) does not have the rights for this one is that it was initially not conceived as a feature film. It was supposed to be an Edwards-produced television series for the British ATV company, but was later re-enivisioned as a television movie, and, ultimately, became the feature film that re-launched the franchise. UA was retained as the distributor in the US, but was not the copyright-holder like it was with the earlier and later films.

That's what I meant - it's not an MGM property and never was. Lord knows why, though. I think MGM's rejection probably made Blake Edwards work all the more to make it a classic.

I think MGM's rejection probably made Blake Edwards work all the more to make it a classic.MGM only aquired the UA catalog a few years ago, and I'm not sure that Blake Edwards felt "rejected" by UA. The film's evolution from a TV project to a film financed by a British TV company had more to do with why UA was not the main production partner than anything else. They were generally very supportive and gave him a lot of leeway.
By the mid 70s when "Return..." was made, Edwards had not made a film for UA since "The Party" seven years earlier. He was at a fairly low point in his career and needed a hit, and the same could be said for Sellers, so they were both very determined to make it good, but not necessarily because of a snub from UA.
Consumer alert: The $38.99 Costco DVD set also includes the three song CD sampler.

Anyone know if any of the retailers are selling this set with the full bonus CD (not the sampler)? (Although I don't have a soundtrack for Revenge, I do have the music from the first four on CD, so I could do my own compilation if I wanted. ;) )

Rudy,
I wonder if the Pink Panther Collection + CD Soundtrack is Deep Discount DVD's own package deal. That CD's title is Ultimate Pink Panther (
http://www.deepdiscountcd.com/index.cfm?request=cd.cfm?upc=82876598822 3) which retails at $18.95 and Deep Discount CD sells for $13.97.
