Well, keeping it one album per band, in the general "hard and heavy" category I'd say (in no particular order):

Deep Purple Machine Head
Led Zeppelin IV
Rainbow Long Live Rock'n'Roll
Uriah Heep Demons and Wizards
Iron Maiden Iron Maiden
Scorpions Fly To the Rainbow
AC/DC Back In Black
Queen A Night at the Opera (stretching the category even further, but I just had to include that:))

If Zeppelin counts as "heavy metal" (not sure myself), I say ...

Led Zeppelin II all the way.

Led Zep - Presence
Rush - Hemispheres
Rush - 2112

Nirvana - In Utero
Foo Fighters - There is Nothing Left To Lose

Okay, Rush do not play Heavy Metal, but I like their progressive Hardrock from the 80's... particulary Hemispheres, Moving Pictures. Can't wait to hear their upcoming new record in summer.

That's a good one, Sckott. Too bad Rollins is such a blowhard. And he meant the first SIX! Sabotage and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath are ahhhsome.

Claus - Lovedrive! You Europeans know your 70's metal. And Holy, Dirt is as heavy as some heavy stuff!

Before I do my list, I thought you guys would enjoy this recent Yngwie quote about Deep Purple. I pulled the link from melodicrock.com

You know, I don't like saying this, but they could do a lot better than what they have now. Steve Morse is a very good guitar player, but he's American and he's using humbucker pickups. If you ask me, those two are not good. I don't want to say it like this, but if they (Deep Purple) could have got me in that band they would have a performance that would blow people's head off. Even now I can play from the beginning of "Made in Japan" to the end. I can do it right now without missing a note.

Is he saying Americans shouldn't used humbuckers? lol

OK here's my list. I wouldn't count the Foo Fighters as heavy metal, but since Jeff included them, so will I, because it's one of my 90's faves! :D

Alice In Chains - Dirt
Black Sabbath - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
Clutch - The Elephant Riders
Faith No More - The Real Thing
Foo Fighters - The Colour & The Shape
Monster Magnet - Dopes To Infinity
Scorpions - Lovedrive
Swans - Children Of God
Thin Lizzy - The Peel Sessions
Tool - Aenima
UFO - Force It
Van Halen - Fair Warning

Iron Maiden-Number Of The Beast
Rainbow-Rising
Fist-Thunder In Rock
The Rods-The Rods
Van Halen-Women And Children First

I'll go with:

Sabbath - Paranoid
Metallica - Puppets (or anything before the black album)
Megadeth - Rust in Peace (why didn't anyone mention this?)
Death Angel - Act III
Maiden - Piece of Mind
Priest - Screaming for Vengeance
Ozzy - Blizzard
Pantera - Cowboys from Hell
Slayer - Seasons in the Abyss
RATM - s/t

That's 10.

For the record, I don't consider Deep Purple, Zeppelin, Van Halen, AC/DC, etc. to be metal. I'm also not including prog-metal, like Dream Theater, King's X, Spock's Beard, etc.

Re: Yngwie, at one time or another, he has insulted everyone. He usually claims that everyone else plays out of tune, then he insults his detractors. He is still big **** in Japan. I once said Japan was 10 years behind the US in musical taste, and I was told Japan was, in fact, a "cultural magpie." They still love Mr. Big. You be the judge.

I have this weird definition where "heavy metal" is is a lighter version of "metal".

I have no rhyme or reason for this, it's just the way I feel. :)

Therefore, I think of Led Zep as being Heavy Metal, while I think of Megadeath as Metal.

That's funny. I guess you have to come up with your own definitions. Mine are "hard rock" and "heavy metal". Which I guess I would differentiate on the basis of the screaming type vocal. Megadeth, Metallica, Judas Priest would be heavy metal, whereas Zep or Bad Co. would be hard rock. I guess heavy metal would also be lacking that bluesy or soulful feel. Or something.

I think of it primarily in terms of guitar, playing and tone.

Metal -- lots of 5th chords/barre chords. Most riffs can be played on the top two strings. :)

Hard rock -- more blues-based, call and response.

The definitions make sense in my head, but I'd be hard pressed to explain them. I don't have a lot of trouble characterizing most bands as one or the other.
