Most recently for me, walking to work this morning listening to Shel Silverstein's words on The Ballad of Lucy Jordan by Marianne Faithfull. Maybe that's because at the age of FORTY seven I've realised I'll never ride through Paris (or Sydney for that matter) in a sports car with the warm wind in my hair.

And before that, about 5 years ago when my 2 year old daughter decided to attack my CD collection to avenge an earlier smack.

The good news: she only destroyed 1 CD.
The bad news: it was Court & Spark DCC.

(she knew what she was doing!)

I once got choked up listening to Wayne Shorter's solo on Steely Dan's Aja - a very majestic performance....

I welled up on numerous occasions when I saw Brian Wilson in concert in London recently - his greatest compositions are the most moving music that I know of!

Amazingly, he's coming to my home town of Brighton in June - needless to say I already have the tickets.

You are all so gonna laugh at me, but I choke up when I listen to my daughter's silly toddler disc. It's just all the nursery rhymes and songs you sang in preschool. Well, they're still singing these same things today. I guess I just think about how this wonderful phase of life passes so quickly, when all is magical, and fairy tales and nursery rhymes are not as silly or ludicrous as when you get older and things get more complicated.

Who knows! Maybe if I saw a therapist I could sort this all out ;)

Not as often as it did when I was, say, fifteen. But hell, when you're fifteen life in general makes you cry all the time, doesn't it? ;)

When Kenny G hits that note on - oh I forgot the song - God I think I am seeing the reincarnation of Coltrane.

Ooh yes. Some good ones there.

There are several Brian and Carl lead vocals that do it to me too:

Warmth of the Sun
Don't worry Baby
God Only Knows

George's solo in Something and, to me, its "twin" Dave Davies' solo in Moments always get me misty.

In My Life of course. Yes, Beautiful Boy.

The innocence of children singing at school. Yes. In fact that happened to me at my daughters end of year concert last year. They sang Reach Out and Touch (Somebodys Hand) and I literally burst into tears. Quite embarrassing!

Don Macclean's American Pie, and Starry Starry night, probably because it reminds me of how Buddy, Ritchie, and The Big Bopper's life was cut short............and of course Van Ghoh......

God Only Know's, also made my eyes water........

Buddy Holly's "Everyday", Beatles, "In My Life."

Johnny Cash's, Folsom Prison version of, "Green, Green Grass of Home", god this one probably does it to me the most.......

Flying Burrito Bros. version of "To Love Somebody", Gram Parsons, probably puts a lump in my throat more than anyone else........

Two that come to mind immediately are:

In My Life - Beatles
Here Today - Paul McCartney (1982 love song to John Lennon)

Separate Lives-Stephen Bishops original, or Phil Collins/Marilyn Martin version
By The Time I Get To Phoenix- Glen Campbell
Family Life-The Blue Nile
Face Me And Smile-The Lover Speaks (the whole album actually)
Honey-Bobby Goldsboro
Lucy-The Hollies

Awww man, I am totally starting to wimp out here! I could go on forever.

This is what makes music so great and so nourishing for the soul. Those times when a song lyric and feeling just nails exactly how you are feeling or describes to a tee a certain situation you have gone through, or a loved one who has passed on, or just plain makes you aware of your own feelings.

Just about every time I hear Joni Mitchell's Blue. I have an lp copy, but doesn't come
close to Steve's. Such a musical treat! Has anyone heard the Langley School Music
Project? It's a recording of an elementary school chorus, singing beach boys,
mccartney, bowie, the eagles. Their take on desperado really brings a tear to my eyes!
You can find this at www.keyofz.com.

After being an eyewitness to the horrors of Sept. 11, I couldn't contain myself watching the Concert for New York when it was broadcast live. Watching the DVD or listening to the CD still makes me well up. Hearing Mick Jagger sing "Salt of the Earth" gets me every time: "...spare a thought for his back-breaking work...spare a thought for his wife and his children..."

P.S. I love "Ballad of Lucy Jordan," Tom Jones doing "Green Green Grass of Home" works for me too, but "Honey"? To each his own, but for me, that one sends the giggle meter into the red.

It's tough for me to listen to Michael Hedges anymore since his death. I'm glad I got to see/meet him twice, but I think that just makes it all the tougher to deal with his passing.

A couple of songs on Don Henley’s “End of the Innocence” CD really get to me, especially “A New York Minute”, and “The Heart of the Matter”. Henley must have been going through a really devastating emotional experience when he wrote those songs. I have been happily married for 28 years and for some reason, songs about ruined relations really get to me.

I'm a girl... Tons of songs make me cry...

I remember my dad playing Honey on his car stereo cassette player... (My dad was something of an audiophile) He died a year or so after Honey... That was in early 70's. (Not many people had cassette players in cars in the 70's) I was in elementary school. Honey gets me for sure.

I'll list some others later... sniff, sniff...:(

However, I realize now that you are indeed correct. Some snippets of the lyrics...

Came running in, all excited
Slipped and almost hurt herself and I laughed till I cried

She was always young at heart, kind of dumb and kind of smart

And it would sure embarrass her when I came in from working late
'Cause I would know
That she'd been sitting there and crying
Over some sad and silly late late show

She wrecked the car and she was sad
And so afraid that I'd be mad, but what the heck
Though I pretended hard to be
Guess you could say she saw through me and hugged my neck

And a small cloud passes overhead
And cries down on the flower bed that Honey loved (now
that one was OK)

I have heard them as I only live 20 miles from the school and the cd is quite good. ;)

Hi,

This is the easiest question yet. Music makes me cry twice a day. Once when I first crank it up in bliss and then at the end when my wife hits me on the back of the head w/ an iron skillet and tells me to turn it down.
