Assuming I only have enough cash (or desire) to buy ONE of these, which should it be:

1. DCC Aqualung $US29.00, OR

2. Mobile Fidelity UD2 Living in The Past 2CD, no booklet $US39.00.

My fear about LITP is that there might be a new improved standard version on the horizon (only a guess).

My procrastination will probably result in my missing out on both!

Definitely the DCC Aqualung. Much better sound than the MFSL Tulls. Although $39.00 isn't a bad deal for Living in the Past... Are they both "sealed", or "MINT", or "occasionally used as a drink coasters", or "doggie frisbies..."? :)

Get the DCC Aqualung while you can. There is no better version of it, nor will there be!

Thanks to everyone for your prompt responses.

Andy, it's at a used CD store in Sydney with about 10 others including Doors and Cream all for the same price.

The MFSL "Living in The Past" is a pretty good one. Too bad the booklet is missing, because that is a very nice booklet !!
The DCC "Aqualung" is a must have, as is the DCC "Original Masters"

My advice is to get both :-)
I had them both but disk 2 of "Living in The Past" was stolen from me....

Aqualung - the best version.
LITP - if it had the booklet, I would suggest get both (along with Wheels of Fire and Fresh Cream) I have an original vinyl Chrysalis copy at my parents house in Melbourne and the LITP booklet replicates that, but adds all the tracks issued on both the UK and US vinyl versions

I have to echo the words of my fellow audiophiles here. Aqualung is awesome. I believe it is the first use of the original British mix (if I remember the liner notes correctly). Love that mix.

Living In The Past would be my next choice. Not as good sounding as Steve's work (you can a/b the Aqualung tracks), but what I love about it is MOFI's attempt of incorporating all versions of the album. Unlike the standard truncated release you get Teacher, Bouree, and Locomotive Breath. Why can't the current remastered LITP have done that?

Go for it!

Brian

I would say get both. Neither are priced too high. I picked up a sealed Aqualung last summer at a little hippie record shop in Sheboygan WI for $26.00. They also had songs from the woods for $26.00 and a bunch of other dcc and mofi's. I ran up a bill on the credit card.

Aqualung is great. The MFSL of "Living In The Past" should not be missed. Great jobs, each of them.

OK here's what happened.

I got Aqualung only. Case is not original. I haggled on the price and got it down to $AU 50.00 ($US 26.00). No postage of course.

Is it correct that this DCC disc is not manufactured in Japan? It doesn't clearly state where it is manufactured but it says "manufactured and marketed by DCC Compact Classics". Place of manufacture doesn't really concern me. I was just interested to know as many DCC discs clearly state that they are made in Japan.

Interestingly, on the inner rim of the disc in large black print are the words "Not For Sale". Have I bought some a promo copy? Does that make it more valuable or a valueless piece of gold plated crap!?

The DCC was not made in Japan, but either at Sanyo or Nimbus, USA. I can't remember.

Looks like you have a rare promo copy.

How does it sound to you?

My copy was pressed at Nimbus.

Says "Mastered by Nimbus".

Have to wait till I get home tonight to listen to it on the home system.

What convinced me to buy it was a comparison I did last night on headphones of the first 5 seconds of Aqualung on the original issue CD and on the Anniversary edition. I couldn't believe my ears! After the first bar of guitar riff on the original CD you can hear somebody quietly tapping, keeping time. Perhaps a foot tapping the bass drum pedal or something like that. On the Anniversary edition after the riff there is absolute silence. Is this some kind of noise reduction software making its own decisions as to when the music stops? Unbelievably bad!

Rare promo eh?.........hmm.........actually I just listened to it. Sounds fantastic! MUCH better than the standard DCC. Anyone want to make an offer? (Um, how do I insert a winking smiley face here?)

So my copies of Dreamboat Anne and Van Halen marked with "Not for sale" are rare? Cool!

Peter,

You say that the standard gold cd of Jethro Tull: Aqualung is different than the "Not for sale" promos of the same album by DCC? I don't think so Peter, as they're all done by Steve using the same master.;)

Andy

Why?
