Hmmmmm, this would taks some real thought because I would only do songs that I thought I could improve on or that I could radically change with a whole new arrangement.

So far, the only one that immediately comes to mind is "Love Light" by the Archies. Don't laugh! It has serious potential!

All,

When I think about the term "Cover Songs" I think back to the early days of Top 40 Radio when White artists made, for the most part, dreadfully awful "covers" of R & B hits originally recorded by Black artists. Pat Boone released many "cover songs". His version of Tutti Frutti is absolutely annoying and awful. Thankfully, this practice ended by the late 57' or early 58' when the record buying public only wanted the real thing!

Bob,

The practice didn't end there. The purposes may have changed, but many blacks were first exposed to cover versions of songs made popular by white artrists in the 70s, at least on a smaller scale. Many people consider the covers as the definitive versions because they were the first they heard, like "Love The One Your'e With" by the Isley Brothers" or "Jive Talkin'" by Rufus.

But back in the 50s, though the reasons were racial, they brought R&B tunes to the white public that would have never listened to or heard of them otherwise. Of coures, now, most people realize that the cleaned up versions are far from authentic and know the real ones. But there are a lot people who still have never heard the originals. They are comfortable with Pat Boone.

Grant,

Good points! Thankfully, oldies stations rarely, if ever, play the cover versions of those 50's R & B songs. R & B artists used to cover each other as well. Often these covers were better than their original version. The most famous "better" covers from that period were Little Darlin'--Diamonds and The Twist--Chubby Checker who covered the Gladiolas and Hank Ballard versions, respectively.

I brought up the 50's cover versions as being nefarious because they were purely racially motivated and artistic drivel, for the most part.

Bob

I once in a while personally like to hear Pat Boone's version of Tutti Fruitti.
