Spring is here so it's time to shed that lifesaver around the waist before hitting the beach in summer. What songs/albums do you listen to in the gym?
Here are some of my favorite workout albums:
The Beach Boys Endless Summer
The Beach Boys Spirit of America
The Beatles Beatles 1
Jim Croce Gold in a Bottle
Jimi Hendrix Voodoo Child: The Jimi Hendrix Collection
Deep Purple Machine Head
The Doors L.A. Woman
Skip to the next song if the pace ain't right. Don't play The Band Music From Big Pink. It will drag you off the stationary bike and all the way to the locker room.

As you can see by the number of responses, exercise is very popular here. :p
Ok, so I'll admit that I'm no exercise-aholic, and when I do I pretty much hate it. So, I tend to put on music that is somewhat complex and I try to bury myself in the music and forget that I'm exercising at all :)
Here's some of my favs:
Al Di Meola - Elegant Gypsy
Al Di Meola - Casino
Rush - Hemispheres
King Crimson - Vroom

If Vroom was playing, I'd have to get up and headbang.
If Race With Devil on Spanish Highway was playing, I'd have to get up and play air guitar. Does that count as a workout?

Remember to breathe rhythmically and not get too deeply immersed in the music. "Tripping" is dangerous if you can't stop when it's time to come out of it. :D

The question is: could you last for the full length of a double album, maybe with a few breaks and an intermission? :D Head banging and air guitar playing could be good forms of cardiovascular exercise as long as you don't hurt your neck, elbow or shoulder. And keep some safe distance from the stereo equipment and furniture, would you? You may lose some weight, too. Just ask Paul McCartney how much lighter he is after the first two concerts of his "Driving USA" tour. ;)
Geeze if it was Vroom playing I'd have to see my Chiropractor after the 38 second work-out.:D

Brian Eno-Music For Airports
Lou Reed-Metal Machine Music
Ever go 'audition' a gym? I've come across a few where the music just SUCKS! Don't know what they are playing, sounds like modern dance music. Sound quality is - of course - poor and you have a hard time *thinking* let alone hearing anyone. Although not as loud as a disco, consistant loud music will damage your hearing.
To drown this stuff out, you have to play your walkman REAL LOUD as to drown out the disco music. NOT good for your ears. How can anyone stand this stuff anyway?

"Well, Sir, the cost is only $499.00 a year for all access, including the pool. How about it?"
"I have not heard music this crappy since an ex girlfriend dragged me into a disco in 1976. It was the worse five minutes of my life. Why would I go back into a disco in 2002? Do they MAKE you play this music or is it actually chosen by the Gym?"
"Uhhh, lots of people wear their own personal stereos."
"And how many of them have hearing loss due to trying to drown out the music? Does your insurance cover this?"
"Well, I'm sure that...."
"No, I am serious about this! What happens if my ear piece slips off? Have you had many complaints about the music here?"
Then the interview goes downhill from there...........

Sorry. That was an uncontrollable rant. I was around in the disco era and just hated it. They butchered soooo many songs! Fortunes were made by putting a song to a disco beat. Stars on 45 anyone? So anything related to 'disco' makes me froth at the mouth. ;)
Gotta have lively music, preferably with a beat. Lynyrd, Springsteen, etc. Beatles 1 sounds like a good plan. Finally, a use for that CD!
Gary,
You mean other than as a frisbee or coaster!
You know, you're probably right, Dave. I used to think that some of my mew remasters were good for the car only. Then I made a big mistake - CDR'd DCC's Made in Japan! Wow, what a difference. You can really appreciate the DCC sound IN THE CAR!
Maybe I should take up skeet shooting? :p
Gary,
Ahhhh finally a great use for that Beatles 1 cd!;)

I made a compilation disc of 60's soul songs like : Knock on Wood, Funky Broadway, Expressway to Your Heart, Hold On I'm Comin', Mustang Sally, etc.
I recorded them on my MD player. Works great when jogging.

I was listening to The All-Time Greatest Hits Of Roy Orbison on the treadmill. The batteries ran out in the middle of Leah. :( I had to drag myself through it without the music. Make sure to check your batteries ahead of time.

Tele,
You may want to considering selling it in the Classifieds Forum to create more shelf space for your music collection. If HZ won't allow it, put it on eBay. ;)
But seriously, give it 20-30 minutes a day 3-4 times a week may improve your health and longevity, which means you will have more quality time to enjoy the fine music. :)
