I'd like to hear some opinions on the best way to hear Arnold Layne and See Emily Play on CD. Off the top of my head there is the Works CD, the Early Singles bonus that came w/ the Shine On box, the first 3 singles bonus that came w/ the EMI mono Piper, and Echoes. I haven't heard Echoes yet but I'm unimpressed w/ all other versions on CD. Any advice?

The CD singles compilation either a part of "Shine On" or the CD Single seperate packaged disc, I believe has both.

You have to hear Arnold Layne and See Emily Play in MONO, because the stereo versions don't have the honest sound. They're processed with wonky reverb and such. Try a vinyl copy of Relics. Betcha won't like it as much!

Well, there AREN'T stereo mixes...the "stereo" mixes of the first two singles are just reprocessed, albeit creatively. Apples and Oranges and Paintbox DO exist in stereo, though (the latter on Relics, the former on the Westwood One comp).

Chris, this is the kind of question I thought we'd be asking of you.

Anyway, that fake stereo on Works actually doesn't offend me. I tend to think you're going to hit the upper limit of how good anything PF recorded in '67 to '68 real quick, so this may be a somewhat futile search.

BTW, my mono EMI Piper didn't come with that 3 singles disc. I thought that was only sold separately (?).

David, do you have a "CD Full of Secrets"? If so, is it a boot or promo, and what's the rare content factor of that disc?

Well......the 'PF 1967 First 3 Singles' disc may have been sold seperately. It's been so long I can't remember. I think the mastering of the Early Singles CD from the Shine On box and the First 3 Singles discs are different but it's been so long since I've played them I can't recall which one was best. (I can't do a comparison now b/c I'm waiting on my new preamp). Arnold and Emily do not exisit as true stereo versions. While most of the '67 PF session logs exist the Emily documentation is lost. It's possible they mixed a stereo version and never released it but I'd say that's pretty unlikely.
