Really, really excited to hear about the Pixies rarities releases...any further information Steve?

Also are you planning to remaster their excellent studio albums catalogue? They always struck me as a band that cared about their sound.

I'm intrigued to hear more about your association with the band..they are up there with my all time greats.

I saw them "live" twice in London in the early nineties and Frank Black in a solo show later on...such electricity and power!!!

:)

I agree, it would be great if Steve worked on the Pixies.

Did you know that the Breeders have a finished album? It's due out this summer.
The New York Times magazine had a great article on them last Sunday. Very messy situation, but the sisters are back together (only original members left), not quite getting along, pretty much off drugs, and already on tour and selling out shows.

Of course, a Pixies reunion will never happen. Black and Deal pretty much despise each other.:(

Agreed! Let's have their catalog remastered! 'Doolittle was always my favorite Pixies album followed by 'Trompe le Monde'. An underrated band for sure. I had not heard of the rarities project. Should be interesting.

I love The Pixies!

Especially since they recorded a song I wrote with my friend Frosty Horton: "Cecilia Ann". In fact, it's the only non original they ever recorded.

So it's fun to be working on their stuff as a mastering engineer.

I'd love to redo the entire catalog!

That would be just great Steve! I'd certainly be behind it for one...as I'm sure my fellow Pixie fan forum members would.

I love all their albums, but have a particular soft spot for Doolittle and Bossanova.

Thanks for your reply.

I saw the Breeders last month and they were really great! :) Very nice, fun people (Kim & Kelly) too. They hung around afterwards and talked to everyone. They both signed my girlfriend's t-shirt and Kelly asked her for a hug when she found out we drove a couple hundred miles to see them.
They sounded great too. We saw them at a pub that limited the crowd to 500 people and they still only charged $15 a ticket! A great time!

Hi Dan C

No I hadn't picked that up on the Breeders new album yet - thanks for the info. I love that song "My Divine Hammer"...

MOJO carried a really good feature on them about a year or so ago...as you say, Frank and Kim D. don't share room space together these days!!

Good to see that Joey is still involved in Frank's solo stuff however.

In some ways I'm pleased they won't reform as I just love their original stuff and it could never really capture that essence again now.

Steve, please tell us more about your Pixies association if possible. One of the best bands ever IMO. Saw Frank Black and the Catholics last year and they rocked. Met Frank after the show but he was busy loading his equipment in the back of the van.....in a perfect world Frank would sell more records than Creed :-)

I didn't know too much about The Pixies initially. I knew they had an Elektra connection and that they used neat cord progressions in some of their songs. I liked Frank's voice.

The story goes that they were big fans of a CD I released on DCC called "Surf Legends (And Rumors)". They especially loved the first song on the disc "Cecilia Ann" that I wrote and recorded with my buddy Frosty Horton.

So, their manager called us up and said that the group was doing a cover and was that ok with us?

Way cool!!!!!! (I said).

Anyway, that's the story. We became close, and I really dig the fact that the opening note of the BossaNova album is a sampling of ME kicking my Fender Twin amp at the beginning of the original version of "Cecilia Ann".

About a year after that, a movie called "Kicking And Screaming" with Parker Posey and Eric Stoltz used The Pixies' version of "Cecilia Ann" as the opening title credit music. SUCH a blast to see the movie in a theatre and hear the song leap from the screen. A lot of fun.

One of the reasons I love these guys is that they really CARE..about the music, the sound, the fans...and they had fun doing it!

How many bands can you say that about in this day and age?

Here's hoping that you get to remaster that catalogue someday soon Steve! (the current CD's aren't that great or that bad, but there is more life in there somewhere I'm sure!).

I know that Frank Black now records his solo/Catholics albums "live" to 2 track and they sound just great, but I'm not sure how much control the Pixies had over the recording/mastering process back in their heydey?

Yeah, a truly neat band.

Too bad they busted up!
