View Full Version : Jimi Hendrix on Ryko. Anyone?
Was just curious as to whether or not I have something of some value/collectability.
A friend of mine gave me this album called The Jimi Hendrix Experience: Live At Winterland, not that uncommon I know.
It is on the Ryko label done in 1987 Made In Japan mastered by Joe Gastwirt/Mark Linnet in L.A. (not very good IMHO).
The thing that's very interesting is that it's on a gold cd and it's mint-.
No listing in the "Gold cd realm" and I've never seen this one anywhere else, not even on the dredded Ebay.
Any info. is greatly appreciated.:)

Rykco issued a few "Gold" cd's in the late eighties, I have the Hendrix disc along with Zappa's "Hot Rats" which did use a different master to the regular version at least. However unlike Rykco's Bowie and later Zappa cd's, these were not gold plated ala MFSL but just had a gold tint added. Never seen a demand for them. More a kind of completest type thing.

I purchased one of the Ryko Gold Elvis Costello discs, and much to my surprise the matrix number on the gold disc was the same matrix number on the regular aluminum release.
Fortunately I purchased this at a store that accepted 7 day returns on discs if you were a "club" member. I returned the disc since it was obvious that Ryko must have used the same "stamper" (or whatever) that they used to press the regular edition. Why pay $25 for a gold plated? disc when the sound would be no different than the regular aluminum version.

The sound quality is no better than the regular release. However, there is a demand for it. I sold it on ebay for $75 about a year ago, then turned around and bought the regular one for $5. Some people just collect gold CD's (obviously quite a lot of them, since there was a lot of bidding on the disc when I sold it).

"The Jimi Hendrix Experience: Live At Winterland" should not be missed. It's a rare glimpse into a raw, energetic Hendrix set. Rarely do any of his recorded performances sound as good as that disc. This CD is OOP and sometimes hard to find :/ Glad I bought mine when I could.
Ryco made Radio One discs, but contentwize, the ExpMCA version wins totally.

Not true. The gold Hot Rats is essentially the same as the regular '80s CD.

The CD insert has a different (white instead of blue) background to the picture of Jimi on the front. Weird that they would tint the polycarbonate rather than use a gold CD like the later AU-20 series.
For superb Jimi audio, have a listen to Red House from San Diego on either the 4 CD box set (Eddie Kramer mix) or Stages (Joe Gastwirt mix with NoNoise added) In either case, it's superb. Harry Pearson had this track selected as a superdisk (from Hendrix In The West) for many years, I believe.

The original issue of the Hendrix at Winterland CD (in 1986 or 87, I think) was with the white cover (both gold-colored and untinted :)). For some reason, they changed over to the blue version (much uglier) a few years later.
I remember they made a big deal about it at the time as an album conceived from the start as a CD. (Of course, it was re-issued as a 2-LP set on clear vinyl when Ryko started doing those.)
I've got a set they put out in 1992 that includes the original album, a second CD with "Like A Rolling Stone," "Are You Experienced" and "Voodoo Chile" from the same shows, and a T-shirt (!).

What’s actually harder to find is “Live At Winterland +3”, a three track companion that was sold in a box set with a tee-shirt along with “Live At Winterland” CD.

I got one of these really cheap; I guess a clearance NOS item. I think it was $20 or so, at a crappy mall store, no less.
