I have the MFSL CD. I was wondering if it could be bettered. The applause between the titles appears to be fake. I wonder how they edited that into the tape. Either they did that to the session tape or to a copy of the session tape which then became the master. If the latter is true, then maybe a session tape without the phony applause and with better sound exists ?
Has anyone got the out-of-print Classic Records LP ? How does that compare to earlier releases ? Did Classic Records use the same tapes that MoFi used ?

Petzi,
My understanding is that the "fake applause" on Jazz Party was added to the original two track master when it was originally created. I have always wanted to hear the music on Jazz Party sans "fake applause".....

This album was recorded 2/19 and 2/25, 1959 at Columbia 30th Street Studio in NYC. Can anybody confirm if three track recorders existed at that time ? If so, I would assume that they recorded the session on a three track, and mixed it down to a two track master subsequently, while adding the phony applause from tape.

Yeah, studios were using 3-track machines, for oh, maybe a year and a half or two years at that point...

There are plenty of fake "live" albums out there. I'm not aware of any of them being released without the fake applause.
How about Getz au Go Go, the best semi-fake jazz record of them all! Read the album credits for clues as to which songs are live and which ones aren't, and listen for the edits and changes in the ambience.

Mr Port,
I do object to the fake applause, but I care even more about the sound of the performance. My idea was, that in the process of adding the applause, they had to make a tape copy of the session tape, which then became the master. And maybe - hopefully - the session tape still exists... This performance would be worth the research.
Since you have so much knowledge of audiophile LPs, have you listened to the Classic Records LP ?

A tape may exist; how are you going to get your hands on it? It will never be seen again, right? No exceptions to that rule to my knowledge.
And I liked the Classic when it came out years ago. Don't have one to revisit to see how it holds up with all the latest improvements in sound though.

Not true. I managed to get the session tapes for "Judy Garland At Carnegie Hall".
Never say never!

That's a fake concert? I didn't know, sorry.

Yes. Tons of fake clapping all over the place!

Then you have done us all a great service!
But please do Getz a Go Go before you do Ellington. The Getz album is one of my favorites; it definitely needs your TLC, judging from the crappy domestic CD, which has none of the magic of the Japanese LP that I proudly own (one of the few from that country I like). It's pure nightclub jazz at its best!

Sorry I didn't pick up on this before -- there IS a Jazz Party in Stereo without clapping available. It was digitally remixed in the late 80's BUT it does sound pretty damn good compared to the mofi.
Who'd of thought an early SONY (or CBS) CD would sound OK???

BTW, Larry Keyes did the remixing.

Way cool. Thanks for this information. There are indeed some good sounding remixes in this "blue frame" series.
I havenīt heard of Larry Keyes before ?!
