Bound to be a source of controversy, Phil has worked on at least one quad mix that I know of, John Lennon's Imagine. While the U.S./Can. Q8 sounds like crapola, I've just managed a high bid on the UK Q8, which, like Floyd's Dark Side on EMI Q8, should be completely discrete. Can't wait to hear that one;)
Does anyone else know of any quad mixes that Spector worked on? They would be few and far between to be sure:)

To add to that question,I have a 5 cd set of Uncle Phil outakes from Gold Star.Wierd thing is they are all Stereo Mixes.Anybody know why.Outakes I would assume would not go thru a mixing process.

>>>>Hilo, I have the same 5 Cd set.
What those CDs are are dubs of the SAFETY machine that Phil had running for every minute of every session. Phil had a 2 track running off the stereo outputs of Gold Star's Mixer to capture everything that went on, in the event that a musician played something as a goof that he liked during a rehearsal or any other time the main recorder was not running.
Those "safeties" were not part of the Phillies Tape Catalog, in fact they were at Gold Star for many years afterwards, being removed sometime in the 80s. Apparantly, Stan Ross threw them out at some point, or they were stolen, and thats how they got out.
I agree that the material on the tapes is pretty amazing. You can really hear parts of the Wall of Sound that you never heard on the records. For my part, as much as I admire Phil and the work he did, man Oh man, those Mixes are TERRIBLE. After hearing these tapes, you see how crappy the final mono mixes were......they are distorted, blurry, indistinct...ect...all the things Phil must have thought were "Great".
What I wouldnt give for state of the art remixes of the Spector stuff from the original, undistorted 3 tracks!!
Or, better yet, with all the parts on the bootleg Cd set, I'LL make my own with Cool Edit Pro!!

Are those Spector CD's still available anywhere? I'd really like to hear them if I could.

Me too. I bet Stan Ross is kicking himself for dumping those.
Mahalo Nui to you Mikey.
That bit of info on the back-up tape is great.Only through forums like this do you find such knowledgeable folks.
2 QUESTIONS FOR YOU.
1.Any chance you have a cover for the 5th disc.My understanding is that the first 4 came out together and the 5 th has just been added on.I think there is a definite change in the sound of #5,not worse just different.
2.I have a killer copy of the Ronettes in Stereo if you need.Plus a few bonus tracks.
As far as anybody needing copies I am always up for trades.Although being new to this Forum I don't know if this is the right place to address that. Can I get some feedback on that.

Gracias, HILO.
Always glad to share infro with others. I never understood people that horded info and would not tell anyone...whats the point then?
Anyhow, my CD set HAD no covers, I made Phillies Record Covers from some scans I found on the net.
And yes, that disk 5 DOES sound worse than the 4 others, its not your imagination. That was def made from high generation tapes circulating around.
Its a great peice to have, tho.
