View Full Version : Met An Acting Idol Tonight
Now, I guess I can die happily. I met my favorite actor, Brian Dennehy, tonight. He's in "The Exonerated" at the Shubert Theatre here in New Haven. My wife and I have journeyed to NY to see him in "Death of a Salesman" and "Long Day's Journey into Night" on Broadway, and I have just about every TV movie and series he's ever done on tape in my collection. He was very generous, telling us "there's no more TV movie roles for guys like me anymore," presumably meaning someone his age. He signed our program, and chatted with us for a few minutes. Surprisingly, there were only about half a dozen people waiting outside the stage door for him. The play he's in is actually a reading, Mia Farrow's in it as well, with testimony as the script from six wrongly accused people who were on Death Row and later released. They were even playing Robert Johnson on the PA when we entered the theatre, which was cool since I had been listening to Charley Patton while working today. Anyway, it was a nice night and a nice meeting.
Dennehy has always seemed like a nice, down-to-earth guy. As an actor, I think he's superb. He's certainly way too good for all those made-for-TV movies he's done.
Call me tacky, but my favorite Brian Dennehy role is Big Tom Callahan. :D

Cool.! I've always thought him as one of those actors who's good no matter the quality of the material.
F/X, F/X 2, First Blood, etc. Always seems to bring quality.

One of my favorites also! Very talented fellow...I freaked when he played John Wayne Gasey!...Yikes...Very disturbing...I felt it was way out of his character and I'm sure he jumped at the chance to play it! Just a Quality individual:) You have a fine memory there...

Yeah me too, it's a shame he had to die so early in the flick.

Many years ago, I spotted Dennehy and Bryan Brown in NYC filiming a scene from F/X. Very good movie, although the sequel wasn't nearly as good.
Dennehy is one of those actors who's good in everything. Anyone remember his short-lived 80s sitcom Star of the Family, where he played a single dad/fire chief while managing his teenage daughter's career as a country-pop singer? Talk about high concept!
