I can't believe it, but a friend was looking on Ebay today and came across Shot In The Dark for $39.95, saying it was out of print. Well...I go over to Amazon to check on it, and all of the DVDs except for Return Of The Pink Panther are out of stock! Some titles have already fetched a premium--used copies of Shot are starting at $34.50 on Amazon, while the others are starting lower. Strikes Again starts at $10.50.

Despite an urge to go out and grab every available copy I can find at Target (I just bought Strikes Again as a gift two weeks ago for $12.99), are these really now out of print? For Target and other mass retailers to stock them, they can't be all THAT unpopular! Maybe there is a new reissue program pending, or is this another film series going into the black hole?

Has anyone seen my minkey?

If it's out of print, I doubt it'll be for long. MGM seems to do this a fair amount... press lots of them, let them run out, then print them again.

MGM has officially announced the DVD release of The Pink Panther: Special Edition Film Collection for 4/6 (SRP $69.96). This 6-disc set will include The Pink Panther, A Shot in the Dark, The Pink Panther Strikes Again, Revenge of the Pink Panther and Trail of the Pink Panther, all remastered (we believe in anamorphic widescreen) with Dolby Digital 5.1 audio. The set also includes a bonus, 6th disc of extras, including 2 new featurettes, 6 original cartoons and more. The set will be packaged in a digipak with slipcase (see below), and is timed to coincide with the Panther's 40th anniversary.

Here is the slipcase. Pretty nifty-lookin' set, but I wonder why Return of the Pink Panther isn't being included.

Wasn't there some talk about a Pink Panther remake with Steve Martin a few months back? Seems to me they're gonna try to create some buzz with that box set.

I believe it was released by a different studio. When it came out on DVD, it lagged the others by months. Plus, look at how different (and ugly IMHO) the packaging is in comparison to the others. Too bad it couldn't have been licensed to be included in the forthcoming set. :(

But that set does look like a good bet. I wonder, though, if they'll release the individual titles again. I, for one, could care less about the horrid Trail Of The Pink Panther. And how many others out there just want to buy one or two in the series?

Looks like they're skipping the 1968 'classic' "Inspector Clouseau":

I never bothered to see that one. Is it as bad as others have said it is? I also couldn't see Steve Martin playing the role--not the right comedic type IMHO.

Another one for the list! I believe I saw "Return of the Pink Panther" in the $5.88 bin at Walmart before Christmas...

Hmmm...if I can scrape up a few copies of the movies at Target, and sell them on Amazon or Ebay for a profit, I'll have bought myself the box set when it comes out. :)

Too bad, though, since the box set deprives all the customers who still want to buy the individual films. They probably won't stay out of print for too long though.

Michael, I wouldn't recommend buying these MGM's. Most are not anamorphic and the quality is not up to par with today's transfers. I suspect that the quality will be much improved with the box, which is why I'm selling these older ones (no more DVD duplicates/or least cut down on them anyway). If you want them (which again I don't recommend) my email name is toddfredericks.

Agree. Hopefully, anyhow. I'll be getting this box.

There actually isn't anything on that box I really want...it has one movie I have no intention of watching, and an extras disc that will probably get one viewing. (The gullible collector in me may still get it though. ;) ) I've actually misplaced my "Strikes Again", so I'll try to pick one up just in case. Never had any quality problems with the MGM discs--they blow the horrid Laserdisc versions to pieces. For the couple of times a year I watch them, the MGMs are fine.
