View Full Version : MFSL Joe Walsh "Barnstorm"--Thanks to all!
Thanks to all who chimed in about the MFSL Joe Walsh "Barnstorm" being one of their favorite MFSL discs. I acquired it today and I must say that it is a darn good disc! Chalk another one up for the forum!
Dan,
What did that set ya back? I got mine recently off ebay and haven't had the pleasure yet. It cost me about $33.00 US.

It ain't nothin' like the JPN CD Issue. ;) Enjoy.
Sckott,
Is the JPN cd really that bad?
Hey, Dave....
Love my MFSL copy of "Barnstorm."
Great version of "Turn to Stone" on it......
I think Joe must have recorded that tune four different times for various albums....
Best from the Desert,
Ben
Dave,
That's wacky. I paid $33 including shipping for mine too.
The last three on Ebay went for $50, $58, and $67!! WOW!!
Dan,
Was that the one on ebay that ended about 5 days ago?
Congrats. BTW ;)

Unfortunately, yes. When you listen to the MFSL disc, you notice that it's recorded in volume less than most CDs. MFSL (early on) believed mastering to digital far below 0dB. There's a philosophy to that, but I won't get into it. There's nothing boosted, brightened or messed with.
And before you think 'bout it, no, they didn't mess with the bottom end either. Short of owning the vinyl in mint, this title ranks as high as most UDCD-1's do, and should be put in high regard. The album is quite a mellow trip. Great guitar tones, easy going lyrical images, and yes, the best version of "Turn To Stone" available, even though I do like the "So What" remake.
Sckott,
Yup, I know what you mean as i have quite a few of the yummy warm lower volumed recordings.;)

Sckott,
Thanks for the info on the Japanese version of "Barnstorm", I had been thinking about buying it for several years. I have always had the MFSL CD since it came out, and thought that maybe the Japanese copy would possibly sound better. Now that I know better, and understand about the lower volume transfer, I will have to revisit the CD in the near future.

Dave,
Yes, I won mine about a week or ten days ago. Only one other bidder put a bid on it. I'm really shocked that someone didn't outbid me by $10-$20. Ebay is funny that way sometimes, it's the luck of the draw.

Dan,
Yeah isn't it great when you score a usually really expensive one for a resonable price.
