Just curious.
I heard a rumor that these titles are available only through December 31, 2003.
Is this true ?
Are they out of print now ?
Are there any other titles those will be OOP soon ?

From www.criterionco.com:

Criterion's editions of Alfred Hitchcock's Rebecca, Notorious, and Spellbound and Sam Peckinpah's Straw Dogs will be available only through December 31, 2003. These titles will be out of print and unavailable come 2004. Wrong Men and Notorious Women: Five Hitchcock Thrillers 1935 - 1946 is also available only until the end of December.

If you want a particular Criterion title, get it now, cause you might have to pay through the nose later.

They'll be plenty on Ebay before long! Like a plague...:)

The Hitch DVDs are an absolute must! Get them now! While there's still time...

As a matter of fact here's the Criterion Hitchcock box set which includes the titles in question at Amazon and it seems to be a fair price:

Wrong Men & Notorious Women - Five Hitchcock Thrillers 1935-1946 (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00008OM70/103-7377278-5039828?v=glance)

Thanks Guys.

Looks like an excellent deal.

Just to remind people: simply because these are going out of print doesn't mean they'll instantly vanish from the shelves. They'll slowly get harder to find, but that won't happen overnight. So don't panic buy just yet! :D

Thanks for the alert. I've been putting off this purchase for some reason. Just placed my order so that I can avoid that horrible feeling of regret later on when these become extremely rare.

I agree 1000%! These DVD's are a must and the box is a great way to get them. They're now OOP and nobody should sit on the fence. I doubt these films will ever be presented on DVD with this high standard (unless Criterion gets the rights again).

Not bloody likely. I've been trying to find Criterion copies of the following films on DVD for some time. Everytime I search an auction on eBay the prices are through the roof.

1. Le Quatre cents coups aka 400 Blows
2. Sid And Nancy
3. This Is Spinal Tap
4. Dead Ringers

I've seen 400 Blows sell for upwards to and over $400 CDN. The other titles are not as severe, but I've seen them all sell for big bucks from time to time.

Fortunately I purchased Nortorious and Rebecca a year or two ago. My good friend, the music software mgr. at a&b sound south tipped me off in October about the 3 deletions and we immediately ordered Spellbound. I got one of the last copies.

If you are after these Hitchcock classics, buy them now, if you can still find them. Don't wait for eBay. Don't trust eBay sellers. They're all money grubbers, IMHO. Just try and find a decently priced mono U.K. or Japanese Beatles LP for under $100. these days. "Not gonna happen". :shake:

Think I'll grab the box set...$100 for five Criterion movies.

miike,

The 400 Blows can now be acquired as part of Criterion's "The Adventures of Antoine Doinel" box set, which also includes Bed and Board, Love on the Run, the complete life story of the character. The DVD of 400 Blows also includes the beautiful short film, "Antoine and Colette." Highly recommended.

I was able to find authentic, reasonably priced copies of Sid & Nancy and Dead Ringers on e-bay quite easily. In fact, I'm thinking of selling them...

Actually, you can probably get the Doinel box for less than The 400 Blows goes for on Ebay.

These discs ARE out of print, but may not command huge $$$ for a while - Critrion ANNOUNCED this title would go OOP (there's usually little or no warning) so most Criterion hoarders have already stocked up and won't be scouring the shelves for extra copies as usually happens. (For example, when the Tati films went OOP, every available copy disappeared within two days. Everywhere.

I doubt the Hitchcock films will command extremely high prices for a while due to the high press runs, but eventually they will probably be some of the pricier titles, after the existing stock has been depleted for a few years, BECAUSE they are popular titles.

Best thing to do is buy them now.

As for The 400 Blows, yes, you can get THE FILM in the box, but then you don't have SPINE #5. And since there were so few of these pressed, there will always be a demand for the original disc because of the SPINE #. Lot's of Criteron completists out there...

I suggest save money and go for the Doinel box rather than the OOP '400 Blows'. I used to own the latter and the new version contained in the box is miles better. The main thing is that it's anamorphic (Zooming non-anamorhic DVD's on WS sets w/ subtitles can be a bitch). Also, technically #5 spine remains with the new set (yet it's on a slim digi-pack). Anyway, the box set is tops!

The Hitchcocks will probably be back in print. Criterion were able to renew their rights to the Jacques Tati films

I agree with you. The new version in the box is much better, film-wise. However, printing "5" on the digipack spine just doesn't cut it for insane Criterion completists like me. You got to have both.

(actually it's ALMOST too bad all Criterions don't come in digipacks, considering the fact that as of Jan 7 2004 the collection requires about 10 linear feet of wall space, and as they've stepped up there release schedule quite a bit in the last year or so, the collection is becoming more and more of a space-hog. :( )

Guys, Todd, thanks for the heads up on the 400 Blows via the box set route, however at the moment, it appears that it is not available in Canada through whoever handles Criterion titles up here. a&b sound just checked their database and could not find the title. They said they will continue to look for me.

I wish Criterion wouldn't announce so far in advance when they are deleting titles. A couple of years back I purchased an OOP Criterion Robocop from a good seller on eBay. He later told me that soon as he found out about the deletion of that Criterion title and a few other Criterions, he raided a couple of sub-distributors in L.A. Hoarder indeed.

A friend of mine here in Calgary has an original Criterion 400 Blows DVD which he paid all of about $35. when it was originally available. Lucky him. :)

Miike, try some online shops, use DVDpricesearch.com. I'm sure you can find the box for a good price. Again, the original 400 Blows DVD is more a collectors item and doesn't come close as in terms of quality as the new version in the box (with same commentary, etc.).

Thanks Todd. The box set is definitely the way to go.

DVD Planet (http://www.dvdplanet.com/search_power.asp?nSearchFormat=1&sPSTitle=Antoine+Doinel+) has the Truffault box set on for $64.97.

Has anyone dealt with DVD Planet before? How is the service, fill?

BTW, to my Canadian pals, Amazon.ca (http://www.amazon.ca/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00008H2GR/qid%3D1073654804/702-5277592-2407220) is selling the box set for $103.40, no shipping charges as the cost is over $39.
