Just got my new Tannoy "Proto Plus J" speakers tonight.

Cued up "Die Beatles" and let them roll. These sound sweet even before break in!! Nice midrange performance. The guitars sound like they are supposed to sound. No more , No less. Very accurate. Very open sounding.

For 199$ a pair with free shipping from Musicians friend, you cant go wrong with these.

Wouldn't Tannoy studio moniters be a bit too, um, searching for word here, ok - literate, or precise for more relaxed (don't read inattentive!) home listening?

Not for me, Syd. I have a smaller pair in my studio for monitoring and thats exactly how I like to listen......accurately. Whats on the source. No more, no less.

How about you?

mikey, thanks for the link. These look pretty cool and the price is right. So, these are a totally different animal from the vintage Tannoys, correct? Would these be too accurate for a vintage tube amp?

Lep, thats a good question. Since i dont have a tube amp hooked up to either of my Tannoy systems, i couldnt say for sure.

However, what i find with the Tannoys in general is that they are extremely nuetral. So, you would probably be able to hear that tubey magic.

When I saw the sale at Musicians friend on these I jumped on it. Another dealer on line wanted 399$.
I love Tannoys. i think they make the best speakers for the real world.
They may not beat a $$$1,000 pair of planar electroctatics, or something but I'm happy to hear The Beatles sound like they should.

If anybody hooks these up to about 30 watts of tube power please let us know how it sounds.

Actually, the manual says that the speakers work with 50 to 100 Watts RMS. So, it might not work that well with 30, altho thats close.

They should be fine with 30 watts. I have a pair of Tannoy Reveals (the next step up from the Proto J's) that I have used with 25 watt tube amps. Very nice!

the Reveals:
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/ (http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/sid=031219093457207250050239451994/g=rec/search/detail/base_pid/601001/)

I bought mine from:
http://www.zzounds.com/ (http://www.zzounds.com/prodsearch?form=prodsearch&q=tannoy&submit.x=10&submit.y=13)

cheaper than Musicians Friend.

Of course all these Tannoy studio monitors are great. A lot cheaper than their consumer line (and basically the same, just different cabs).

Also I have the Tannoy Studio 8 which uses the 8" dual concentric. More $ of course but you can find any of these studio monitors on ebay all the time.

Know what, tho...the Proto J's have a bigger driver than the Reveals, I believe.

Right now I'm playing "Nat King Cole- The Christmas Song" on the Proto J's and BOY does it sound nice!! That orchestra sound is amazing!!

Well, check
www.tannoy.com (http://www.tannoy.com)

and it says they're the same size, 6 1/2" but they do look different. Both have a sensitivity of 90db. Seems to me that a 30 watt amp would be fine, especially if its in a small area and at reasonable volume (like for an office).

The tracking notice they sent says I should receive these on Christmas Eve. That should make for a good present to myself. :D

I was really pleased with the sound of these babys.

jker......hmm, youre right. Same size driver. I wonder if its the SAME driver?
I'd bet it is.

How do you like your reveals? I LOVE these. For the music i play (all 60s) these are groovy.

Are these speakers magnetically shielded? It doesn't mention it in the link.
