I used to have no probelms playing CDRs in my 2002 Honda Acord stock CD player burned on my old system (Windows 98/HP 9100i burner/Adatec software/various CDRs).

The same type of CDRs (Memorex black 48X CDR) will not play after being burned on my new system (Windows XP Pro/LG 4040B burner/B's Recorder Gold5 software(or MediaPlayer software).

The discs burned on the new system WILL play on my home CD player, my son's Honda Civic and my clock radio.

CDRs burned on the old system still play in the Accord.

I've tried one other type of CDR with the same results.

Any ideas?

Yeah, this tells me that the LG burner is writing discs with laser power than the hp burner did. It just doesn't seem to like the dye the Memorex black discs use.

Memorex CD-R is made by Ritek. Ritek uses Ptylocyanine (sp?) dye and makes blanks for TDK and Maxell.

What other brands did you try?

One more thing to consider, I had trouble playing TDK blanks burned with my old HP burned at 2x. I have no problems with them playing in anything as long as I can burn them 8x or faster with any newer burner. THose speed ratings are to be taken seriously. They do mean the difference between a well-burned CD-R and a bad one.

Older blanks are rated for slower speeds, so the older burners like that HP worked well for them. Nowadays, the top speed for burners are blanks are typicaly 48x and higher.

Can you swap the LG burner for the HP burner that worked so well?

To add to Grant's advice, I read a few months ago on a computer website (PC Magazine, to be exact...I believe it was one of John Dvorak's articles) that higher speed CD-Rs are recorded optimally at higher speeds. Seems to defy logic (my gut reaction is to burn it slowly if there's a problem), but it appears to work.

IIRC, Honda still has their CD players manufactured by Alpine. The Alpine changer in my CR-V (1997) still plays anything I throw at it, even old CD-Rs burned on an ancient Matsushita SCSI CD-R drive.

I think some of it may be due to the natural desire to think in the analog realm?

Take that LG burner and throw it in a very dark place. Either get another HP or Lite-On burner. Plextor if you want something super solid. Both DVD and CDRW drives by LG tend to take a huge nosedive in less than a year in most cases I've seen. Some Compaqs had LG CD Roms in them very early on, and they weren't that great either.

I wouldn't blame the CDRs...

I didn't want to put it that drastically , but LG is one of those brands I see at the computer shows, where I usually don't see many name-brand drives. :( I'm debating what to get for my next drive, but on my main computer I may just bite the bullet and get a Plextor DVD+/-RW. For my "mini" computer, I'm thinking of a CD-RW/DVD-ROM combo. Wasn't too impressed with the LiteOn DVD-ROM drive I had--it died after a year of very light usage.

Well, I like Sckott's sense of humor! Dark place, indeed! Yeah, I see those LG units in small computer shops all the time. Now they''e turning up in Wal-Mart alongside the Lite-Ons. CD burners are so cheap nowadays, you can afford to stick to a major brand and get a decent one. But, if you want the best, it's still Plextor.

My sense of humor usually involves tying a rope around (___ insert favorite defective item here _____) and dragging it behind the car to the outskirts of town. Or, perhaps, part of my ongoing series of test involving what a person can or cannot cook on a Weber kettle BBQ. :D
