I've been playing a bunch of old 45s from the 50s and 60s lately. Almost all of them are mono and I started thinking about setting up a mono system for playing this type of vinyl. I would be using it for 45s most of the time but would also like to be able to enjoy the mono Sundazed Dylans etc. that are around now. I like the idea of using only 1 speaker, a mono cartridge and keeping everything simple. Does anyone here have a set up like this or have any recommendations? Is it worth the expense and effort? My stereo system is fine for stereo recordings but I don't feel as if I'm getting the most out of the monos. I don't have a stereo/mono switch on my current setup so the mono recordings sound too noisy. Unfortunately, I don't have a large budget to work with but I don't mind working with some tube kits or DIY things. Suggestions?

Grado makes a cartridge in the $100 range especially for Mono or for a the small sum of $2100 you could get a Helicon mono. I'd go with the Grado.

A mono setup with your current system will sound incredible. You are welcome to go down to one speaker, but why not use both in your current system. Grado will make a mono cartridge in any of their models. While the Lyra is amazing, the cost is a little too high for your application. You will be amazed at how much a mono cartridge will add to the mono recordings.
