View Full Version : Eric Clapton: Journeyman
So what are your opinions of his Journeyman album?
If you like/or don't like it why?
I've heard a little bit of trash talk from time to time on this and the old DCC forum and I just can't agree with such statements as, even Slowhand wasn't that great and nothing past Slowhand was any good.
I honestly think that this was probably one of his best albums ever because we got the best of EC's styles ie: pop, r&b and the blues.
This one gets alot of playtime in my home.

The album is very good, but it doesn't have the soul drive as "August" or "Money & Cigarettes" does, two other Duck Records releases/WB.
"Behind The Sun" is just about the best of the lot, inside the WB/Duck years. A lot of great ideas, and both the vinyl and CDs sound great.
"Journeyman" is an album that's been burned out, I feel. If it makes you and yours "rock and roll", then don't listen to anyone else. It's a good album. I own it too, ya see. I feel he's done better. I'm not going to mention his RSO stuff/PGD. That bunch of years stands on its own....
I've been on a steady diet of Louis Armstrong this week, and I'm VERY glad I fly solo at home. The significant other would dog me big time for wearing out one artist on the playack!
"Rock And Roll Heart" is a great tune. Actually in a C&W vein.

Dave, I gotta say this one didn't do anything for me. Perhaps I'm being too picky but after hearing him with Mayall-Cream-Derek & The Dominos-up to 461 OB, everything else after this with the exception of From the Cradle ain't my bag. But, I'm more of a blues fan than a pop fan so there is a certain amount of bias on my part. It's probably an unfair comparison on my part but having listened to SRV all through the 80's, my standards for Clapton were not met until From The Cradle. Oh well...

I attended the Eric Clapton concert at Alpine Valley on the fateful night when Stevie Ray Vaughn died in a helicopter crash. As I recall, Eric was doing his Journeyman tour, so the Journeyman CD is a special CD to me. On the CD, the songs are too slick, too perfect. On the other hand, those songs are phenomenal when performed live.
I also attended Eric’s “Back to the Cradle” concert. He ONLY performed the songs on “Back to the Cradle” plus some other classic blues songs. Even though he played to perfection, the crowd expected that he would perform his biggest hits, which he didn’t do. To be honest, the crowd was not satisfied.
It's all just opinion anyways as far as Clapton goes.
I don't think that I would even try to compare him with SRV though as SRV was a freakin' guitar god!!! Clapton never displayed that kind of skill even in the RSO days but even still is great.
Whatever floats our boats eh guys.

Agreed. And it didn't even result in racial slurs, name calling and obscenities about our mothers. I love this board. You guys are the best !

Ed,
I've noticed that the flamer/type people don't hang around here very much at all.
There have been 1 or 2 (1 here in the begining and 1 on the old DCC forum), but they seem to be told in no uncertain terms by the rest of us that that's totally inappropriate behavior and henceforth they leave.
Yeah we are quite a civil lot here.;)
Oh YEA? Well my Mother can take your Mother......... shopping.
:D
............sorry, couldn't resist! ;) ..........

Yeah Dave, I remember things getting kinda ugly on the Old DCC board a few times, especially with that whole SACD vs DVD-A debate. Glad we don't have that **** around here anymore !

I'll go ahead and admit the truth-I haven't heard either format yet so I got no opinion. Not a real priority just yet. Maybe next year. But I'm sure learning alot about it all around here !

Jeez Dave I knew that ! Kidder Extraordinaire ! But SOME people take that debate WAY too seriously if you know what I mean. There were times when you'd think it was gonna turn into a blood match ! Maybe someday when I get ambitious enough I'll go and hear what all the hub-bub is about but for now CD's are good enough for me. :D
