It is a very good inexpensive Sony SACD/DVD player. Worth owning.

Can this play DVD-A discs?

Not the hi-rez. Just the Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 with the help of an outside HT receiver.

It's still a very nice SACD player. My buddy has one and it sounds very close to my 775.

Thanks guys... just ordered it. It seemed like a good price and I've had good luck with Sony products so what the hell.

This looks a lot like the changer my friend had...decent unit, I wasn't wild about how the controls worked, but I think it was just adjusting from my old Toshiba DVD changer. Good sound, at least!

I bought the single-disc version. So far so good! I'll have a better idea of the quality once I hook it up to my Fisher tube amp, which is in the shop right now....

I've got one of those. I was always happy with it. Works like a DVD player, not like a cd player. It's been moved to our second system in the living room while the Pioneer 563-A is in our listening room with the good amp and surrounds.

Never any problems with this unit.

I believe the Sony multi-channel SACD players have internal DD and DTS decoders. My cheap 500V does. It's great to be able to pop the 5.1 analog output into my ICBM bass manager.

Richard.

Yep, the 685 has 'em. Oh wait. It seems that I recall it would not decode the DTS CDs. Those I had to use the digital out and let my receiver decode them. But only these types of discs (DTS cds). Otherwise, DVDs with a DTS tracks are decoded by the player and can be output by the analog outs.

That is because DTS "CD" are not legal CD's under the Red Book standard. Perhaps there is a hack approach to trick the player into playing them as DTS encoded DVD's.
