Can I just say how much I love this show? Combination cooking show, melodrama, sporting event, and cultural study of Japan, and totally watchable and enjoyable. Anyone else think the Chairman dude is a genius AND lunatic?

Chairman is an actor, don'tcha think? He's scary.
I love it when he chooses something like Squid or live fish. Seeing the chef's buckle down can be fun to watch.
Has SNL done a parody of this? :)

Could there be a better parody than a US version with William Shatner as the Chairman (unintentional, perhaps)? I haven't seen the US one, but I can't imagine SNL could do better.

I love watching this show, one of my favorite cult shows! Chairman Kaga is a hoot, somewhere between Elvis and Liberace. I love the cheesy dubbed dialog, and the "celebrity" judges that we Americans have never heard of. The only drawback is that 9 times out of 10, the key ingredient is some kind of seafood, and I hate seafood in all its manifestations. :shake:

My wife and I have been huge fans of the show.
Speaking of seafood - don't you just squirm when they eviscerate a live fish - the Lobster (Homer they called it) episode comes to mind. Legs and claws still moving minutes after being removed. :hurl:
Guess they don't have PETA in Japan....

My favorite Iron Chef quote by one of the female panelists (you know the young pretty one they always bring on, not the astrologist):
"The flavors are dancing in my mouth!":D

Did you notice that about the third season that the "astrologist" suddenly became the "food critic".

I thought so too. I gave my friend an "Iron Chef" book for Christmas and it has profiles of the regulars and it actually was two different women. Or so they say...;)

Yes. A couple of seasons ago with Charlie Sheen as the host. He played the All American Bachelor Chef. Chris Kattan played Chairman Kaga. I want to say Horatio Sanz played the Iron Chef. Will Ferrell may have been one of the critics.
I remember not being particularly bowled over it. It seemed rather rushed to sort of capitalize on its somewhat sudden popularity.

Book? My wife would love that for Christmas! - What's the name of it?
Thanks.

I thought the book I got him was paperback, but the cover is the same. It's a pretty neat book. Has a recap of all the battles and who won them.

You guys didn't see the episode with Hideki Saijo? He dueted with Barry Manilow on "In Search of Love" on Manilow's 1985 self-titled album.

Should visit the Asian markets here in the Bay Area. Live fish evisceration is nothing new.

Intersting that Rogue Brewery of Newport Oregon has produced two special beers for Chef Morimoto.
I just can't seem to find any of the Morimoto brews locally though.

Most memorable Iron Chef moment for me was when squid was the theme ingredient, and the preferred method for euthanizing them was to smash them repeatedly with a couple of huge dikon radishes.
