I want to find the best sounding version of this LP. There is the MFSL gold CD and a MFSL cassette release. Some kind of Canadian audiophile vinyl, Japanese vinyl and the remastered US CD. Does anyone know which one I should look for?

If you get the LP, you miss the bonus track "Murder By Numbers" unless you find the A&M UK 12" of "Every Breath" on 45RPM. A track they had room for, and should have left on [side two].

IMHO, the MFSL isn't the best I've heard. I've liked the way the US A&M sounded, minus most every record club pressing. A&M had used a particularly "weird" vinyl. Hold up an original US pressing of "Synch" up to the light, and you should be barely able to see though it, in a dark blue color. It was only for this LP, and they weren't very sucessful with keeping this "virgin vinyl" clean. You can see imperfectons and speckles in the mixture, since the album is partially transparent.

As far as CDs go, I don't know if it's equivalent to the remaster or not, but I like the version on Message In A Box. Haven't heard the MoFi.

I can't agree with Sckott on this particular album.

The A&M sounds a little too compressed for my liking and quite frankly my MFSL UD1 blows the A&M right out of the water. But hey, to each his own.:)

Folks, the MoFi original Gold CD is a flat mastering from the two-track master tape.

It ain't perfect, (needs a touch of midrange magic), but it's the one I play.

New 180 gram on Universal out of Germany is the best I've heard. Top recommendation from BR.

Seems to have the midrange magic that Steve misses from the flat transfer, to my ear anyway. Never liked the record until I heard this copy.

Let me quote myself:

"The best sounding version I've ever heard! Finally.

"I never even liked this album—it always sounded blatantly commercial: thin and bright like a 45 single. I couldn't get past that to hear the music. This version, however, is full bodied, sweet, and transparent, just the way I like 'em. Another example, if we needed one, of how the sound of a piece of music affects the ability of the listener to appreciate it. I find it hard to imagine this album sounding any better than it does on this LP. If you want the best sound, look no further."

I'll stick with the version on "Message In A Bottle" for now.:)

A tad bright but I think that's the way it was meant to be.

That's "KC-600" audiophile vinyl, available on the first pressings. Never liked 'em myself.

To Tom Port-

Do you sell the German record you say is the best? Also, how does it compare to a Japanese pressing (if you have heard one)?

We always sell the good pressings; that's why we are Better Records!

Japanese pressings? Don't like 'em. Never heard that one but wouldn't expect much.

What color is it?

Have you ever ragged on Quiex anywhere here? The original, not the 'new' RTI stuff.

No, but eventually I'll get around to ragging on everything you like. Be patient!

Where exactly did I say I liked Quiex vinyl? Don't read something that's not there.

I LOVED Quiex vinyl. My old Tom Petty LP was done on it. Nice quiet surface. Only for promo use if I remember correctly.

Sckott, "Murder By Numbers" was also released as the B-side of the US 7" of "Every Breath You Take".

It's a joke. I didn't read it; I made it up.

Most of the Tom Petty vinyl I heard sounded pretty bright and awful. What titles are we talking about here? Damn the Torpedoes? Hard Promises? Those are the ones I know that had promo Quiex vinyl.

All the Quiex was promo, but they sure made a lot of them.

Hate to say it, but again I agree with Tom Port.

The 180 gram Universal is my favorite of this album.

RE: Quiex. Just picked up a first press of a 10,000 maniacs album and the Tracy Chapman S/T on Quiex. Fantastic sound quality, and really quiet. Much better than the standard issues.

I think Queensryche's debut EP was commercially available pressed on Quiex vinyl.
