View Full Version : Great sounding standard release Cd's
Hello to one and all,
How about listing the really great sounding first release/standard issue Cd's? We hear so much about remasters and poor standard issues...let's hear about the great ones (Steve's taken as read!).
My first nominations are:
Johnny Cash's Rick Rubin produced American 1-3 series
kd lang's Ingenue (Ben Mink produced)
Mary Margaret O'Hara's Miss America
Bjork's Vespertine
Radiohead's Bends, OK Computer, Kid A and Amnesiac
Probably many more when I think about this a bit more....
Keep the faith!

I just listened to Warren Zevon's self-titled 1976 album (produced by Jackson Browne) the other night, and thought it sounded darn good for a run-of-the-mill budget CD reissue.
Agreed on Rubin's Cash albums. Great stuff. Can't wait for #4 later this year.
Ryan
...in addition to my previous nominations:
Spiritualized "Ladies and Gentlemen We are Floating in Space"
Best wishes

One that immediately come to mind is
Richie Havens - Mixed Bag
So real you would think he's in the room, which may not be a good thing.

Think what you want about the music but the new Madonna remasters are very good. A big improvement over the 80s CDs. What shocked me was how much better "Like A Virgin" (DDD) is.
I also thought David Bowie's remasters on Ryko sounded good.
I just listened to Paul Simon's You're The One last night. It sounded very good. A lot of feel to the instruments.
Sorry Grant I can't agree with ya on the Ryko Bowies as the old RCA's sound much better.
A couple that I can think of off the top are,
Jerry Doucette: Mama Let Him Play (on K-tel no less)
ZZ Top: The Best Of ZZ Top (Waner Bros.)
Both of these sound like completely flat transfers from the masters.

Suzanne Vega's Solitude Standing or Rickie Lee Jones' Pop Pop. Great music...

Hey Guys,
Isn't that a bad thing?

Jeffrey,
Even if it is a bad thing.......Sounds pretty darn good to my ears. ie. no digital artifacts, no excessive compression, great staging, full cymbals. My ears are happy.:D

A flat transfer shouldn't be considered something evil if the tape being mastered sounds great the way it already is (e.g. a well recorded, non-LP cutting, tape). Any additional EQ or processing will probably just muck it up more. This is what, IMO, separates the men from the boys when it comes to mastering engineers. The best ones knowing when to leave well enough alone. Conversely, also knowing when a *little* TLC (or in drastic cases alot!) needs to be thrown in. : )
Some of the no-noised, dynamically squished crap that I hear - I WISH would have been transferred flat!!

I'll second that. Another good-sounding new album (maybe a little bass-heavy) is Leonard Cohen's Ten New Songs; also an excellent release in musical terms.
All Dire Straits remasters by Bob Ludwig sound extremely well.
I have enjoyed the sonics on two CDs from The Chieftains - The Long Black Veil and Tears of Stone.

Togo,
I love Radiohead and I have heard Spiritualized recommended for Radiohead fans. Can you give me any more info about them and what they sound like?
Thanks,
Ryan

I thought we were to name our favorite original issues cd releases.
Here's mine:
Neil Diamond-12 Greatest Hits(Original MCA)
Steppenwolf-The 2nd("" "")
Most Elton John MCA's.
Most original Mercury CD releases(except of course "Kiss", but that's because of the sources)
Funny someone mentioned RadioHead's "The Bends".
I always thought it was too compressed and bright.

Hi Ryan,
A pleasure...
Spiritualized is fronted by Jason Pierce. Formerly of Spacemen 3. Albums include Pure Phase, the aforementioned Ladies and Gentlemen and most recently Let it Come Down.
The music is very lush on the last 2 albums featuring Jason's yearning vocals, heavenly guitars, orchestra and even a choir on the latest one. The songs range from beautiful and angelic to down and out dirty guitar freeeak out.
The limited edition packaging of their CD's is also something to behold on the last couple of albums.
Some people love 'em some don't...I do!
Well worthy of investigation IMHO...be patient with them and it pays off.
Best wishes and keep the faith!

Bit of a recluse by all accounts...a very private lady. Morrissey is also a big fan of that album.
The only other recordings I know of are her Christmas EP and a few guest appearances including Morrissey's "November Spawned a Monster" single.
Some great stuff is best in small doses they say...
Keep the faith!

Supposedly Michael Stipe is also a fan of "Miss America".
Perhaps the next list should be reclusive musicians...
Hmmm....
Kate Bush not a bad place to start.
Any other offerings?
Cheers!

Here's a few that always had a great sound to me:
Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms
Bryan Adams - Reckless
James Taylor - J.T.
Kenny Loggins - High Adventure
Michael Hedges - Aerial Boundaries
There's many, many more but these standards are first to come to mind.

I haven't heard this CD, but aren't these the "loud drum" versions available on the other ZZ Top CDs? It is my understanding that these are actually remixes.
