A friend of mine wants to buy a pair of used speakers for a bedroom system. He'll be using a 40W solid state amp.
He has about $200 to spend. Any recommendations?
Thanks.

I'm assuming his bedroom is average sized. Some decent sized bookshelf AR's, Advents or even some KLH model 6's?
Depends on a whole lot. What's his amp? Or is it a plain reciever?
I still like my "New Large Advents" circa 1983 or so. I don't know what the newer ones sound like though.
Good luck!

Size and models of speeks matter much, just like Gary made on point.
Speakers are like shoes. You never just buy em. You have to try them "ON". ;)

Hey Sckott,
Ya obviously ain't met my woman. She doesn't have time for that try 'em on non-sense. Her motto is the more shoes, the better.
Do ya smell plastic burnin'?

Advents have good sound. Just beware of speaker foam rot as most Advents will eventually fall prey to this. Had a pair of Advents recently die when the foam disintegrated during a laud listening session.
Jeffrey,
Is that Eau de Visa that I smell? How intoxicating.;)

Hey T., there is a guy I know who repairs speaker surrounds! And another place that can have speakers fixed from scratch!
Don't toss those! E-mail me!

My compliments, Mr. Gary. That's some great advice that I wasn't smart enough to take on some AR 92's & still regreting it!
My '81 Advents are here to stay.

Hey Dave,
That all depends on which way the wind blows. From where I sit it just smells like shi# but from where my wife sits she appears very intoxicated.
Oh well.........

Wow. Means that you can use a similar excuse to your hobbie? Multiple collections of shoes from yer woman.... Cinderella syndrome. She's still not found her glass slipper.
Lady I'm good friends with had these wild earth-colored striped socks. Brown, red, black, brown...again... Like a Cat in the Hat type look. Not even knee high. Wears em with normal clothes. I got such a kick out of those stupid socks.
"My friends make fun of these socks!" she said.
"Well your friends are LAME!" I exclaim.
Ah, nice to get laughs from the extrogen peanut gallery. Besides, she thinks my record collecting is "Better than alchaholism!"

You could get a slightly beat up pair of Klispch Heresy's for $200 bucks. They might not do everything, but even with a 40 watt amp they're going to be loud!
