Steve H-i love that stream of thought regarding the Smile album.what other artists do you think overproduce themselves or other artists.i am a Steely Dan fan but always wondered why it took 100 takes to get a song right.i think this is one of the factors that destroyed the beatles in the film let it be the beatles are essentially doing take after take of the same songs and on many bootleg releases you can hear a guy say take 64 of whatever-it must have been very boring for them.

Although not a Steely Dan authority, I remember reading that Becker and Fagen hated all of their records. The simply didn't feel they captured the songs on tape in a way they thought was any good, but were happy the public bought the albums anyway. I guess some people are perfectionists. Just my two cents.
