There's no swimming in the heavy water, no singing in the acid rain. Red Alert! Geddy Lee/Neil Peart

Joel Cairo, you amaze me. I love "The Old Payola Roll Blues"!

Never realized anyone else ever heard that thing. Played it a few days ago. Always makes me chuckle. Barney Schlock of Obscurity Records.
:)

For years I never realized that the title was a take off on "The Old Piano Roll Blues". When you're a kid you take everything at face value.

I also never understood what Tom Terrific meant when he said that Crabby Appleton was rotten to the core. Silly, eh? When you're five years old and staring at the TV, you just accept it....

Thanks Steve... Stan's a big fave of mine. I personally think that his "Wunnerful, Wunnerful" is hands-down the best comedy 45 that's ever been released, moving seamlessly as it does from a dead-on parody to what is essentially a brilliant radio-sketch format, but I've always had a soft spot for the "Payola Roll Blues" ... mostly 'cos I like Jesse White's work so much, also.

"I've got a feeling Clyde Ankle's gonna be racing up the charts"

"He is if you keep on with that stick, boy..."

-Kevin

Y'know, Steve, you should do a comedy anthology... though much as I love the idea of hearing Stan, the Firesign Theatre and others with "the breath of life" (TM), I'd hate to see you spending valuable time wondering which spool of tape contains the real 2-track master of "Loving You Has Made Me Bananas"

You know, Marshall Blonstein and I had a great "Comedy Greats of the 1940's, 1950's, 1960,'s" set worked out. Had all of our favorites on there.

Problem was, it cost too much money for our little company, especially when the Dr. Demento stuff clued the record companies in on the fact that they can charge just as much for a three minute comedy record as they could for Elton John.

So, we didn't do it.

NOW, BACK TO SONG LYRICS WE LIKE!

"But if you go carrying pictures of Chairman Mao, you ain't gonna make it with anyone anyhow".

When I first heard that on the radio, I flipped. Not too many songs on KRLA had a lyric like that. Thank you John.

Loved it!
