i've just had a wonderful upgrade to my CD player (a rotel 975) it included a better clock and seperate power supply for the clock (also some caps and part of the dac was replaced) and it is a wow wee improvement. previously my vinyl was streets ahead of the CD player well now i'm starting to understand why steve hoffman and others say that CD can compete.

i did a lot of A/B ing of vinyl and CD and there wasn't much in it the only difference on wish you were here (master sound gold disk) and an american pressing was maybe some extra weight to the notes on vinyl. same for david bowie station to station. of course all this extra detail also means that the shrill sound of too much treble on CD mastering is also more apparent and i now find that i am listening to CD's at a lower volume.

has anyone else had this upgrade??
for anyone who wants to upgrade without spending mega bucks on a new CD player i highly recommend it.

Neal,
Where did you get your Rotel serviced. Was this something you sent back to the company or did you use someone else. Just curious.

Yes, details please! :)

What kind of power cord? What parts of the DAC?

I know of a place that will upgrade your output stage. A significant improvement for $350.00 Canadian. One day I may get this done. The only reason why that I am hesitant is that these guys make significant profits from this upgrade. So I am trying to find an alternative place......

unfortunately it was done in south africa by a guy who makes the most amazing amps etc (we need to as we can't afford all this expensive equipment what with the state of the rand) but i chatted to him and he said he can send the clock and power supply to people along with diagrams etc.

all the changes made were

power cord - upgraded to electrocompaniet power cord
clock and power supply for clock
high speed diodes replace those in the rotel power supply
op amps replaced in dac (i think this is correct)

if i am technically off on any of the above please excuse my ignorance.

the total cost was $300 including labour. the guy reckons he is cheaper than anyone on the web (i have to agree some of these upgrades just for the clock are expensive)
