Steve,
I just picked up the Herb Alpert "Definitive Hits" cd (2001 copyright)sporting Doug Sax' 20 bit tube mastering. Did you get the tapes before that project, after, to help with?

That was done before I could go through the reels and pick out the ones that I would have used or tried.

But, even though there are too few TJB things on there, they are flat transfers, without no-noise or anything else. So, for the time being, that's all there is. Hopefully I can change that, but it's up to Herb A. in the end....

One interesting liner note: "After recording the Lonely Bull album the multi-track tape of 'The Lonely Bull' single was lost...You are listening to an enhanced monaural version."

Not sure what kind of enhancement. Wonder if they were going to re-mix a stereo version of one did not exist. Glad to have the mono!!

The stereo version exists. Less distortion on it, but perhaps it had not been unearthed when they did the CD.

I have this Definitive hits CD, I also have a cheap sampler series called Top 40 hits (dutch top 40), they have a cd for each year starting in 1965. On one of these there is the TJB track "A Bamba" and this sounds so much better than the definitive hits CD. And I can't imagine that they did any effort at all to get the sound as good as possible.

I would've liked to had more TJB stuff on there too.

The newer material seems to clash with TJB.

Guess we'll have to live with it for now.

Two weeks ago in Albany, I picked up a sealed stereo copy of The Lonely Bull (A&M101S) I haven't opened it yet. Maybe This weekend I'll give it a spin.
