Greetings! I thought it might be interesting for the forum to share their initial foray into the crazy world of "remastered for superior sound" CDs. In my case, it was 1995 and I picked up the Sony MasterSound gold CD release of "Bridge Over Troubled Water." I purchased it primarily out of curiosity to see if there really was a difference in sound quality as compared to the standard Columbia CD issue.

An A/B comparison between the two releases left little doubt in my mind that the MasterSound was markedly superior. Using reviews in then-current issues of "The Abso!ute Sound" and "Stereophile," I began to learn about Mo-Fi, Dunhill Compact Classics (as DCC was known at the time), and this guy Steve Hoffman, who must've been somebody important; his name was touted on the CD packaging as if that was a selling point! {:-)

Regards to all,
Michael

Jazz at the Pawnshop
Cantate Domino
The King James Version

All on the same day - the day I bought my first CD player (7/3/85). The first two were so bad sounding that it was nearly two months before I bought another CD. I just knew it was a record company plot.

1986/87: Abbey Road - MFSL vinyl

In accordance with the current trend, the stamper numbers are:

Side 1: MFSLI-023-A11 SR/2 1111 * X
Side 2: MFSL-I-023-B5 SR/2 151*

The asterisks I noted above do not really appear as asterisks, they are more like hand etched symbols somewhere in between a cross and asterisk. Whatever this all means, sounds good to me.

My first gold disc was DCC, Paul McCartney Band on the run.

Being a sceptic about gold discs, I only picked it up because it was used, $20.00.

Blew my socks off, man! "THIS is what it's supposed to sound like?!?!? Holy Smokies!" Blew away the 25th anniversary disc - everything!

Been a Hoffman fan ever since.

As for other gold discs, nothing else measures up. But you have to settle for the 'best available', right? Too bad we have to compromise. Wish Steve could do everything, don't you?

I bought the remixed Layla CD ("This must be good..."), and was so horrified, I returned it and bought the MoFi CD -- the only other one in the store. What a relief! First DCC? One of the McCartneys, I think.

Original MoFi "Dark Side of the Moon", in the big black plastic longbox it was nearly impossible to pry the disc out of. :)

Dreamcatcher,

Perhaps this thread should have been done as a poll? Just a thought.;)

First Audiophile CD--
MoFi Aluminum "Year Of The Cat" by Al Stewart
Still stands as one of the best purchases I've made despite all of the griping about MoFi (which is largely deserved).
