Stuff on the Replacements reissues

Awhile back I asked about the story that the Replacements dumped their Twin/Tone masters in the river. I think Scott and Jason clarified things for me and said that Twin/Tone still had the masters and used them for the planned reissues. Anyway, I found this article:

And it mentions that they used digital copies of the original analog tapes because of tape deterioration. How would this help the mastering process?

If this is true, it's time to seek out the mint original LPs while they're still to be found in the used shops. Hopefully they have something positive to offer, sound wise.

I saw the Replacements right before they broke up, touring with Tom Petty ('89 I think). I was just getting excited about their stuff when they split, so that kind of stunk!
