With the gold cd's at the prices they have been the past couple years not just the mofi stuff ... how about some comments on the ones not worth going the extra bucks for? There tend to be discussions on good ones and some times some of the not so good ones get mentioned but here is a chance to get a concise list. :) ::eek:

I'm probably in the minority here, but I'm not terribly impressed with the Who discs on MoFi. Tommy is OK, but Quad and Who Are You sound dullsville. If you want the original mixes of these, I think the European CDs are the way to go.

The MoFi Who's Next and Live At Leeds are carbon copies of the MCA remix/remasters, with all their good and bad points intact, at least as far as I can tell.

An issue I will NEVER let drop: the MoFi Kinks/Kinda Kinks *IS* just a slightly re-eqed copy of an old Japanese twofer that was made using the PRT tapes. What freakin' nerve.

A lot of the Columbia Mastersound discs are pretty bad. Super Session has been singled out as being a bad one. I just got a copy of Stand! and it's almost unbearable. Very bright and shrill. Others such as Bridge Over Troubled Water and Santana are pretty good (IMHO)

What's the story on the DCC "Doobies Bros best of" CD? It seems like I read at the DCC board there were problems with the tape masters on Listen To The Music. Is that true and is it restricted to that song or others as well? That's my favorite song by them and I have access to that disc locally, but if LTTM is bad I might pass on it.

LOL!

Steve's funny. I can read his mind. Luke posts a while back that there is tape damage on "Listen To The Music" and it plants a seed in someone's ear. Next thing we know, this Doobies' CD ends up on the "Stinkers" list. I'm sure Steve is thinking back on the month or so out of his life that he spent working on this project.

Don't worry Mr. H. It's one of your best efforts! ;)

Yes, I'm very impressionable, I'll have to keep an eye (ear?) on that Luke guy. Now if I can get to Circuit City and get that Doobie disc before someone finds where I "accidently" stuck it in the 'Dr. Hook' section.

I'd like to say for the record that the MOFI CD release of Queen's "Night At The Opera" was a real stinker, IMO. Anybody else agree? I am looking forward to trying the DCC release; that is when I can get one (and at an affordable price).

Maybe there's some reason the recording sounds so muddled and thick. Just maybe it's my system. Any thoughts on this one?

My contributions to the stinkers list:

1. Jimmy Buffett Songs You Know By Heart. (MCA Ultimate).

2. Heart Heart (self titled) (Mo-Fi)

3. John Mellencamp Lonesome Jubilee (Mo-Fi)

There should be a surgeon generals warning on all three of the above, listing that listening to any of these can cause tinninitus and or severe hearing damage.

My two choices aren't really stinkers per se, but simply sound exactly like their commercial counterparts: U2 "Unforgettable Fire" and J. Lennon/Y. Ono "Double Fantasy". Not worth the extra $$$, IMHO. They kinda turned me off to MSFL in general.

Ditto on the MOFI "Unforgettable Fire"! If I remeber correctly Brian Eno was behind the controls on this session...but even as much as I respect his work I have yet to hear a good release of this album.

GRP gold CDs that I have of Lee Ritenour - Wes Bound and Diane Schuur - In Tribute seem to sound very similar to regular CDs of those titles - no major improvement, that is for sure.

I don't think MoFi Queen - A Night At the Opera was a stinker - at least not as bright as the Hollywood Records reissue. Steve's remaster is clearly superior though.

Ok. My 2 cents,

All Sony "The Best Of The Best" gold cds made in Germany are nothing different than their standard releases.

Most MCA Ultimate Masterdiscs (Too much bottom and top). The only exception so far is B.B. King: Completely Well.

Sony Mastersound is stated what's good and what's not are listed under Mastersound: The good, the and the ugly as I did a complete post on the Mastersound issue.

Zounds Gold are not too bad, but still a smiley face eq., and no where near Steves work and MFSL's from Japan.

The MFSL story we all know well, hits and misses. The safe bet with MFSL is to try and stick with their UD1's and aluminums (Japan) series. There are a couple of exceptions that I'm aware of, them being Santana: Abraxis UD1 and The Grateful Dead: From The Mars Hotel.

When I find an absolute stinker from Steve, I'll let ya know.;)

Don't know if this qualifies as a "stinker" - but MoFi's "Thick as a Brick" CD by Jethro Tull sounds no better than an original US pressing of the lp. On the positive side - that is considerably better than the commercial CD. On the negative side - Steve's DCC version (which duplicates the entire first side of the lp on the "Original Masters" CD) makes it sound pathetic.

Guess we'll never hear from you again on this subject, huh Dave? ;)

My 1 cent worth: I was disappointed in the gold Ryko AU20's for David Bowie. Yea they are a bit brighter, etc. but I expect more from an 'audiophile' disc. I only have 'Low' and 'ChangesOne' but I have no desire to seek out more for the big bucks that they charge!

'they" = anyone! :D

I'm just going to stay out of this one this time...

I find the latter "stinker" interesting since it ended up on a thread entitled the best of MOFI - Part Two not too many moons ago. several on that thread felt that John sounded as though he was right in the room with you. As a result, I snagged one for $30 sealed and love it. The standard remasters of John, I believe are no-noised!

But that's what I love about this board, a wide variety of respected opinions.

Steve,

I couldn't agree more. I got my Double Fantasy this past Friday. Wow! Love the sound. Definitely not a CD belonging in this thread.

Not me. I prefer the Mofi even over the DCC. Less harshness on Freddie's vocals, particularly on "Prophet's Song".
