My wife is considering getting me for Christmas the Prisoner series on DVD. Brief internet research shows there was a 10 DVD megaset put out a few years ago, but I also see a 5 DVD 35th Anniversary version that was released in the last couple of years. This latter version does not surface on most of the american sites I've searched, leading me to suspect it wasn't released here. So, was the 35th Ann. ed. put out here in the U.S., and otherwise, will it play on most U.S. DVD players? I see hmv.co.uk offers it for about 40 pounds, but indicates its Region 3 (Europe). How do the features compare, assuming any of you have made the comparison? All help is appreciated.

If the DVDs are coded for any region other than Region 1 (US and Canada), and your player has not been modified to play other region DVDs, it will not play. Sometimes, DVD manufacturers would put the region marking on the box, but would not code the actual content, but there is no way of knowing that until you try to play the disc.

If these are European (PAL) DVDs, in addition to having your player modified, you will need a multisystem player to play the PAL content, and a multisystem TV to show it. You might have the player convert PAL to NTSC (no need for a multi TV then), but the results may vary.

Region 3 is not Europe, it is Cambodia, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam. If the dics are indeed Region 3, they should be NTSC, but you will still need a modified player to play them.

Also keep in mind that a lot of cheaper multi-region players don't look very good.

I was an impatient schmuck when these DVD's were trickled out and bought them one set at a time (which made the cost much higher than if I'd waited and bought them as a set). They all look great (much better than my laser discs). You can't go wrong with the domestic DVD's available everywhere. They're top notch.

Costco had the ten disc set around Christmas time last year for $89. No predicting when/if they'll have them again (The Costco Pledge).

Todd, the complete A&E region 1 (US) set will do you fine! Great show and great taste!! Do a search on dvdpricesearch.com for good price. Maybe wait until Christmas draws closer.

I have the full DVD set, in addition to the full set of laserdiscs, and VHS videos, and the DVDs are the best.

That's as much as I can tell you.

What more do you want:

"You won't get it"

"Be seeing you" !
