Hi, analog newbie here...

I'm getting a Thorens TT and since my solid state receiver HK AVR520 doesn't have a phono in, I thought I'd buy a tube pre-amp and find out what I've been missing.

Theres a Dynaco PAS-3 for sale locally for $160. Would it make sense to use it as a phone stage into my HK receiver for amplification temporarily until I get a tube amp?

Also, what are the relevant questions to ask the seller? He says it works fine. Any checklist I can use to visually inspect the pre-amp?

Thanks

Listen to it. I've got one, just collecting dust. Make sure it works and isn't noisey or hums. I really don't know the phono specs. For less than $160 you could buy a new or used phono section which may be better.

edit: actually I have the PAS-2. I think the PAS-3 is solid state, which makes me think you should look for a stand alone unit of recent vintage where you may have some control over gain, loading etc...
