Last week I saw Matrix Reloaded on the IMAX screen in the Luxor in Las Vegas. The screen is someting like 70' high by 120' wide. The sound system had 30,00 watts!!!
All I can saw is that the experience was amazing. The movie almost appeared 3D. The scene where the motorcycle is being driven the wrong way down the expressway was the high point of the movie. Of course, the fight scene with the hundereds of Agent Smiths was also great.
If you are in Las Vegas, make sure that you see the movie.

It's also playing in IMAX theaters across the US. I saw the IMAX version in NYC months ago, btw it is still playing.
The Matrix Revolutions IMAX version will be opening day & date with the 35mm version.

Haven't experienced The Matrix in IMAX, but have seen Two Towers and Gangs of New York at an IMAX theater in New York. Amazing experience, you feel like you are "in" the movie. Hope they show Return of the King.

I SO envy you guys in metro areas that get to experience this. My IMAX experience is limited to a feature on coral reef life off the Coast of Calf. that I saw on a trip to Phoenix, Az.

Just out of curiosity, do they "pan and scan" these flicks to the IMAX aspect ratio, or do they just project across the full width, but not the full height of the big screen? Thanks.

The Matrix Reloaded - IMAX edition was "letter-boxed". There were black bands at the top and the bottom of the screen. The IMAX edition was treated to the new process which allows a 35 mm film to be "blown up" to the IMAX format.
I've attached a link that explains the IMAX DMR process.

Some IMAX theaters show films in regular 35mm format just shown on the IMAX screen but the picture is not in the same league as an IMAX print.

Thanks, mhvbear. Interesting article. I wonder if any directors/producers have thought about going the other direction, filming a feature in IMAX, and doing 35mm prints for general release? The only one that I have ever heard was considered for such a process was APOCALYPSE NOW! Of course, that didn't happen, but that would have been something.

They released a different version of Apollo 13 to IMAX that was a completly new cut of the film and formatted to fit the IMAX print completely. That was quite interesting. I am not sure if they have actually done any other movies that way instead of the letter boxing scenario.
