I was wondering as their slogan was something like "the best quality from the original master tapes". What did it mean when they issued a UHQR release of the same record, that they hadn't done their work ok?:(

They still thought that.

Some people rave about 'em, some don't. All depends on what type of sound you like.

Mastering is always subjective.

Very true Steve... subjective!

And MOfi haven't used always the original master tapes... the big lie!

DCC/S&G could do something in the vein of the UHQR.

Hey, think of the audiophile nutties going for something LIKE it, a Limited Edition pressing of 220g (or just a tad heavier) 3 or 4 45RPM Lps in VRPs with a box, just like the UHQR, but looking like the master tape's box, printed perfectly with authentic-looking copies of the tape box stickers pasted on it. It would look and feel as heavy as the master tape. On a booklet inside, there can be specific mastering notes by Steve and Kevin, and the outside of the booklet would be the original LP art.

Each title would look different and authentic looking to the master tape, except at 12.5" size for the Lps.

A certificate is signed by hand by Steve, Kevin and Tom Port. Maybe a place on the back where it can be blessed by a priest.

Only 250 pieces made. Retail $65.99.

...Or maybe "not".

See? Marketing. I'd buy one though.

Sckott,

Sounds like a good idea to me... Only please don't use 220gm vinyl. Screwing around with the VTA for every damn record can get tiring... 180gm will do!

True. Okay, scratch the 220g.

Hey man, don't get me in trouble with the bossman now.

Give credit to those who deserve it. That ain't me, no way, no how.

The reviewer is neither the playwright, the actor, the producer or even the stage manager.

He's just the reviewer. He gets no credit for doing any of the work because he doesn't do it. Talk is cheap, in other words.

TOI: Theory of Incompetence. Memorize it.

Also: Caveat Emptor. Even better.:D

I playfully mentioned you because you have shown up on some DCC releases. I think Steve and Kevin get a lot of praise too? Nah. :)

But seriously folks for I fear we digress......

Other than the heavier vinyl, is there any other difference between the MFSL lps and the UHQR issues?

KLM,

The biggest difference was and in a bigger way now is, the price!! Sorry, I couldn't resist...

Of course they are different. You can't master two records identically, especially years apart with different equipment.

Look for the word "ortofon" in the dead wax.

The ortofon system came about at the same time as the UHQR in 1982. Previous versions were not cut using the ortofon cutting system.

Does that make them better or worse?

Neither. Both. It makes them different! You have to play them and decide for yourself.

Finger Paintings? Which is better? UHQR or regular version? I have an opinion. What's yours?

I could ask that question eight times. 8 UHQR's. 8 different sounding versions.

If these complexities are vexing, very vexing, if you are vexed by them, there is an easy solution: ignore them. Just play whatever record you have and take it for what it is, like 99.999% of all the people who ever played a record did over the last fifty years.

Bose makes a nice radio for those people who think playing records is too much trouble. They didn't get rich doing it because people like to make a lot of effort finding good music to listen to. This hobby rewards right minded efforts tenfold at a minimum, IMO. Make the effort and see for yourself.

Me would buy this as well, I is paying currently more to get some of the old standard issues.
