A friend of mine bought a WX11 wind controller to use with a software version of the Yamaha VL-1 (a "physical modelling" synth) on his laptop. Now we needs 2 things, but both of us have no idea about audio hardware really...

we need a single, good, easy to transport (i.e. not large and unweildy), self-powered speaker that projects sound in a room well... like, to an audience. The more volume & less distortion the better. Our budget is somewhere around ~$220, but preferably less :)

we're also wondering about a USB soundcard for a laptop. We don't need recording quality (44khz 16-bit is all we need), but we don't want crap (over 45ms) MIDI latency, which many soundcards are known to give.
We were looking at the m-audio sonica (http://www.m-audio.com/products/consumer/sonica_page1.php) since they're known to make okay musical stuff. We're just wondering if there's a cheaper alternative :)

thanks to anyone who can point us in the right direction!

m-audio makes some excellent interfaces, some w/midi, some without.

Apogee makes tremendous interfaces, but more $$$ (1200- 6000)

here's one for 150... balanced and unbalanced... good deal. Not consumer.
