I bought a CD - The Very Best of The Doors - this weekend. It says it was digitally remastered in 2001 by Bruce Botnick. I was really pleasantly surprised at how good this CD sounds on my system and thought I'd pass this along if there are any Doors fans out there (they were/are LA homeboys, after all).

It has most of the cuts from their collection I really liked - classics like "20th Century Fox", "The Crystal Ship", "Love Me Two Times", etc.

I guess my favorite cut is "Riders on the Storm" and I was really knocked out to hear the clean, extended highs on this cut along with the driving bass and the overall jazzy feel to it.

The drum sounds Botnick got on some of these records are about the best I've ever heard...

There's a Doors website www.thedoors.com for anybody interested. It looks like there are a lot of reissues. Plus some interesting paraphenalia like resin "Lizard King" bookends (is there no limit to what is possible with a fertile, creative merchandising mind?).

Back to the original point - if you like The Doors, you won't be disappointed with the sonics on this CD.

Nice job, in my opinion. The care lavished on this shows.

Seems to me if the analog masters (circa King Tut, I think) are in that good shape, they deserve a 180 gram LP. Anybody interested?

It's also important to note that this compilation is HDCD-encoded, like all the other original Elektra album reissues of the past year or two. It sounds even better if you have the proper decoding equipment to listen to it with!

HDCD - really!

There's no mark on the package to indicate this (but I believe you from the sound of it).

How did you know?

None of the current batch of album remasters or this compilation are labelled with the HDCD logo, but playing them activates the HDCD indicator on my Audio Alchemy DDE 3.0 20-bit D/A converter. These are the best-sounding digital pressings I've heard outside of Steve's remasters for DCC, IMHO! For those on a budget who can't afford the premium prices of out-of-print DCC pressings, vinyl or CD, the current remasters by Bruce Botnick and Bernie Grundman offer the best bang-for-the-buck!

It is Microsoft® HDCD™ :) indeed.

BTW, I never liked the way HDCD recordings sounded on a non-HDCD player. I had several Mark Knopfler's HDCDs and a few jazz titles - all with a characteristic boomy sound that seemed to overemphasize certain frequencies.

Well, I'm a true Hoffman fan, and I do respect his work.

I always read the A/B postings DCC remaster vs ... remaster, and I guess we have a Hoffmania here! I also prefer the warm analog tube sound from Steve Hoffman, but Bernie Grundman's 24-Bit remasters sound better than the DCC's - not in all points, but overall I would go for the new remasters.
It's not fair to compete the DCC LP's with CD's... I did a very long A/B testing with DCC's gold pressings and the latest CD's.

Mazort,

There is a good thread here:

The "Complete Studio Recording" box set is done in the same way. Sounds superb.

Is this the greatest hits CD with a black & white picture of Morrison on it? Just one CD right?

I know that the US and UK versions differ. The US is one 16 track CD the UK has two discs and 37 tracks. I have the UK version. IMHO I think it has the best track selection. It also has Who Scared You, the b-side I believe of Wishful Sinful

The US version is weak. No Unknown Soldier, Alabama Song, etc.

The mastering is astounding!

The one I have is one CD with the B&W of Morrison on the front. Didn't know about a British version, it does sound more complete and Wishful Sinful was a good cut. Source for the UK version?

Are the current Doors Remasters the same Remasters as the recent Box Set? I always use Steve's DCC "Hello I Love You" as a demo for my system. VERY IMPRESSIVE! sounds wonderful!
