View Full Version : Elton John/others...MCA releases from 80's

I just traded in some Elton John Rocket "Classic Years" remasters for some budget Canadian MCA versions issued in the 80's. The MCA ones stomp the new ones into the ground, especially "Madman" "Caribou" and "Don't Shoot Me..."
I was wondering if the members of this board might know and be able to list some of the ones originally done by Steve Hoffman. I know he did Golden Earring's "Moontan" and I'm sure (by the sound of it) he did "Walkabout" by The Fixx. Others?

Hey Steve! Yeah... I wanna know too: did you do any Fixx?
(BTW, I run official website for The Fixx: www.thefixx.com)

Check the "Discography" link at the bottom of this page (or any other page). It lists all the CDs that Steve worked on.

Well, it's not quite ALL. I'd say MOST. There have been some trickling in. Indeed, I have a few that I still need to add.

Geez. I can't really remember. I know I did one Fixx, and a bunch of stuff, uncredited. If they sound like my style, I probably did them! But I can't be sure. I wasn't a mastering engineer at MCA. I just supervised albums that I liked.....

Hey Steve,
If there is something we think you might have mastered but aren't sure and if there is no credit on the album and you can't remember, can we burn off a copy and send it to you for your confirmation?
There could be a forum string listing the albums in question. Then once you have reviewed them, you can confirm yep, or nope if you actually did the album or not!
Then we could all go out in search of the ones that you can confirm that you did. This would make my collecting so much easier! :D
What do you think?? :D

Great idea, AudioGirl!
Actually, i'm pretty sure I have extra original copies of Phantoms, Reach The Beach, and Walkabout I could send ya for confirmation.
Please Steve, let us send you music! :D

ARGH!! Now look what I started...
Like Steve has nothing better to do! :(
But gee Steve, if you could, uh... in your spare time, it would be real interesting and a fun thread to watch too.
Another question regarding these 80's MCA releases. Are the two greatest hits CD's (Vol. 1 & Vol. 2) worth getting? We know for the most part that Steve did a great job on Vol. 1, but did the standard versions of these releases ever sound any good? Or did the individual CD's just plainly sound better.
I think he means Elton John's GH, Vol 1 & 2.
Don't forget Steppenwolf's debut album!

The MCA CD or Greatesrt Hits is a good one, and one I won't part with. Perhaps i'll give the DCC GH another try if I find a copy.
Volume II sounds like ****, just like the vinyl did.
Maybe, one day, if the stars align correctly and the sun rises on time, Steve and DCC will be able to release Elton John's GH2. Until then, we can only dream... :(

I just picked up an Elton John compilation CD entitled "Your Songs", released by MCA in 1985. The booklet's credits state "Compiled by Michael Goldstone and Steve Hoffman". The CD itself sounds excellent and it definitely sounds like Steve's work.
