One of the few things that were any good about the Grammy's was watching Ralph Stanley up there with all those folks collecting the best album award over that $%^&*+ Bono.

Funny how that article talks about the industry "staking its survival on singles rather than albums." Try to buy a single the past decade or so? Other than pop hits, there's usually not much out there. Thank goodness for imports and promos.

How was the rest of that soundtrack?

The rest of O Brother is great - I didn't have a problem with it winning album of the year. Personally, I think the Dylan and India.aire albums were stronger (hard to make such comparisons, though) but still a worthy winner.

If you like roots music in general, or are a particular fan of bluegrass, Alison Kraus/Union Station, etc., it definitely is a good purchase. If you are not, or don't care for albums the Harry Smith's Anthology of American Folk Music, O Brother may not do much for you.

I have an album somewhere called The World of Flatt and Scrugs. I love it! How does Alison Kraus or Union Station compare - or do you know?

I was very happy with "O Brother Where Art Thou?" winning Album of the Year. I was really disappointed that the movie received faint attention at the Oscars (biggest nomination was for best screenplay and it didn't win any).

It was also great that the Hank Williams tribute album won best country album, too. Could this be another traditionalist revival in country music? I hope so.

A lot of really great roots country music is on the Rounder label where quite a few of those folks are/were signed to because Nashville couldn't care less about them and this album sells 3 million copies and it can't be said it was from a massively successful movie. All of Music Row has egg on their faces with this one I'd say,HA! HA!

Kind of hard to actually compare the two, but if you like bluegrass you'll probably like Alison Krauss and Union Station. I recommend their latest CD New Favorite. With Flatt and Scruggs you don't get the beautiful voice and mean fiddle playing of Alison ;)

Alison Krauss put out a solo album in 1999 called Forget About It. Some people thought it a bit too dark and introspective, but I liked it a lot. There's a killer (IMHO) version of Todd Rundgren's song It Wouldn't Have Made Any Difference. This CD is less bluegrass than her work with Union Station.

Craig is right about Alison Krauss's cover of "It Wouldn't Have Made Any Difference." It's superb.

To the best of my knowledge, yes. (Well, it's on cassette too.)

Would have made a wonderful LP release, but it seems it is not to be ...

There is also a DVD video entitled "Down From The Mountain" which features live performances of almost all the songs & artists from "O Brother". It was filmed at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville and also includes a back-stage look at the various performers preparing for the concert and discussing their musical legacy. Highly recommended for those who enjoyed the "O Brother" soundtrack because it adds the extra dimension of live performance to this great roots music.
